This is a topic that has occasionally caused friction between the English-speaking Mega Man community and certain circles within the Japanese fanbase. Some fans have openly objected to our efforts to dump and preserve pre-release and prototypes and other out-of-print materials.
This was also a point of contention back when the Rockman Unity app was active. The app was region-locked to Japan, but we regularly datamined it to make its free, app-exclusive wallpapers available to English-speaking audiences. A vocal subset of fans overseas werent. particularly happy about that, either.
A new fan-made PC port of Tekken 6 has sparked a debate on Twitter:
•Japanese critics: It's unauthorized and violates copyright - follow the law.
•Western defenders: It's game preservation, requires players to supply game files, & fills a gap Bandai Namco refused to address.
