(Win Semiconductors,
🚨 THE WORLD'S LARGEST GAAS FOUNDRY JUST ADDED 9 POINTS OF GROSS MARGIN IN ONE QUARTER. ITS AI OPTICS LINE IS IN VOLUME AND THE LASERS ARE NEXT
TAIPEI, Oct. 28 - 穩懋 WIN Semiconductors (3105 TT), the largest pure-play compound semiconductor foundry, reported third-quarter results at its online investor conference on Wednesday. Revenue landed where the company had guided. Gross profit came in well ahead of its own expectations.
- Revenue NT$5.86 billion, up 11% from the second quarter and 31% from a year earlier
- Consolidated gross margin 37.4%, up 9.2 points in one quarter and from 26.9% a year ago; the parent fab alone earned 40.7%
- Operating margin 24.2%, up 10.1 points
- EPS NT$4.55, against NT$2.30 in the second quarter and NT$2.52 a year ago
- Capacity utilization 75%, from 65% last quarter and 60% a year ago
- Revenue mix: infrastructure, mostly satellites and aerospace, 35-40%; cellular 25-30%; Wi-Fi 15-20%; optical 10-15%
- Fourth-quarter guide: revenue up a low-single-digit percentage, gross margin in the high thirties
On the call, management said its InP photodetector line went into volume production this year, grows again in the fourth quarter and should ship in much larger volume across 2027. Customers have finished most of the development work on CW lasers and EMLs, the laser types used in AI optical modules. Each customer runs about six months of reliability qualification, so 2027 brings pre-production revenue and 2028 is when the lasers contribute in size. Management also expects low-earth-orbit satellites and direct-to-cell service to lift infrastructure demand next year. A day before the call, Silicon Valley startup PicoJool said it will build VCSELs with WIN on 6-inch wafers.
I went through WIN's equipment filings on Taiwan's disclosure system. Between May 26 and Aug. 26 it placed NT$810 million of orders with ASML's Taiwan unit, and between April 8 and Oct. 13 another NT$522 million with Japan's JEOL (6951 JT), both listed as "for production." That is NT$1.33 billion of a full-year capex plan management put at NT$2 billion to NT$3 billion.
A year ago this fab ran at 60% utilization on a 26.9% gross margin. This quarter it ran at 75% on 37.4%, with the photodetector line just starting to ship and the lasers queued behind it. I'd expect optical to take a bigger share of WIN's revenue every year through 2028.
