The way of the world is to bloom and to flower and die but in the affairs of men there is no waning and the noon of his expression signals the onset of night.

Reminder that the goal of these Soviet era torture chambers was to bring about the blank slate that they so fervently wished truly characterized men’s souls. After their victory in WWII, the communists’ primary goal was to turn the entire world into a space wherein one loses one’s self and one’s mind. The effort is ongoing and nothing but death will stop it.
Prison cells built during the Spanish Civil War were designed as “psycho-technical” torture chambers inspired by the work of surrealist painter Salvador Dali and abstract artists Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, among others. The Military Information Service of the Spanish Republican Army contracted Alphonse Laurencic, a French citizen of Slovenian heritage to design the cells, meant to hold known or suspected Nationalists who were aligned with General Franco’s fascist forces. Laurencic was an artist, musician, and architect as well as an anarchist and member of the National Confederation of Workers. The cells were built inside Catholic churches by forced laborers who first stripping out all religious iconography before construction. The jails were called ‘Chekas’ in honor of the original Soviet secret police organization because the USSR was providing support to the Republican government at the time. At least three Chekas were built between 1937 and 1939, in the Santa Úrsula convent in Valencia and the churches on Vallmajor and Zaragoza streets in Barcelona. The tiny beds were tilted at 20-degree angles so that prisoners would slide off onto the floor if they ever fell asleep, and some rooms had a very high, angled chair which was impossible to sit on. The floors themselves were covered with a random pattern of standing bricks meant to keep the prisoner from walking or lying down. Green and red flashing lights would wear them down mentally, and the walls were painted with geometric patterns intended to provoke dizziness and visual discomfort. Prisoners could also hear an amplified metronome which moved at varying speeds and were kept within sight of a clock that ran too fast, all to further disorient them. After General Franco’s forces claimed victory over the Republicans, the new government put Laurencic on trial in front of a military tribunal, and he was executed in 1939. His work on the prison cells was largely unknown for more than 60 years, until art historian Jose Milicua uncovered a document summarizing Laurencic’s trial. #spain #civilwar #surrealism #modernism #bauhaus

No IQ 85 is the sad sweet spot for criminality. The research is clear on this: Crime causes poverty.
You reduce crime by eliminating poverty. The reason so called nice neighborhoods have lower crime rates is because people’s basic needs are being met. It is not because of police, alarm systems, or neighborhood associations. Poverty creates crime.
Community note
Sibling studies show no causal effect of childhood family income on violent crime after accounting for shared family factors. US violent crime declined during the 2008-09 recession despite rising poverty, and more police officers reduce homicides. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25147371/ pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34050646/ fbi.gov/news/stories/2… pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37009208/

The same is true of the Tsarist regime. People just naturally assume, because we’ve all imbibed so much left-wing nonsense, that however bad repression was in the Soviet Union—tens of millions dead—things must have been worse under the Tsars. They really really weren’t.
The reputation of Benito Mussolini’s regime is so outsized from the actual repression it engaged in. More Italians died in a cholera epidemic in Naples in 1884 (7,000 to 8,000) than were killed during his entire rule (estimated between 5,000 to 7,000).

This is how it actually works btw. You are handed the role of local administrator, you absorb public acrimony on behalf of the regime in the manner of a heat shield — then as you are used up and the public tire of you, you are rotated out for another bureaucrat. The same rotten policies continue on just as before, now with a fresh face to sell them to the public. The real prize comes afterwards in the form of endless dinners and handsomely compensated speaking events. That is the administrative workflow. They're not really presidents or prime ministers or "leaders" in the way the average voter would understand the term. I'm not sure how long it has been like this. They're just interchangeable heat shields.
It’s as if Macron doesn’t want to win the next election. It’s as if he has a big fancy job waiting for him with more pay, more perks and less stress - which of course he does.

Turns out having a deeply religious and homogenous culture with strong ties to the town, the community, does more for violence reduction than any social program. Justice enforced by the community itself. The occasional Lynching etc. It is the safest part of the country by far.
