We just took another major step toward finally closing Rikers Island. By permanently closing a jail and transferring three properties to DCAS, we're moving closer to closing Rikers for good.  Our City's resources should be invested in rehabilitation, restoration, and a smaller, more humane jail system.
NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration announced the closure of a Rikers Island facility Monday. City and jail officials said the North Infirmary Command was permanently shut down. @MKramerTV reports. cbsloc.al/3R51rRk

The Gorsuch concurrence (joined by Justices Sotomayor and Jackson) in Hunter is a welcome sign that at least some of the justices understand just how awful plea bargaining practices are and may be open to future limitations. It's worth a read: supremecourt.gov/opinions/25…

Fetterman: I think the reflecting pool and the ballroom are entirely appropriate. America is turning 50 years old. Why would we want to make sure everything looking great. We need a ballroom.

Amazing work by @CivRightsCorps! They do so much to preserve the presumption of innocence, and Alec is right this good for liberty and public safety because needless pretrial detention leads to far more crime and disruption than it prevents.
We won! Hundreds of thousands of people who are currently detained and separated from their families in lower-level cases will be released from jail every year. An incredible victory for liberty and public safety. You can read the historic decision here: civilrightscorps.org/wp-cont…

The final version of the paper is now published and live, with a greatly expanded application section and some new historical finds. Thanks to everyone who gave me comments and workshopped the piece with me—it’s so much better for everyone’s input! yalelawjournal.org/pdf/01KQD…
Hi Folks! I wanted to share a 🧵about my JMP in @YaleLawJournal (now on SSRN). It reconstructs the law of officeholding in early US, arguing that it is inconsistent with the unitary executive theory. (1/

You may wonder how that investigation could take more than a year, but here's a shot of the elaborate undercover sting operation
AG Todd Blanche says the investigation into Comey’s seashells involved a lot of work from law enforcement over a year.

Decisionmaking, your day will come
You've been asking for this one for years. We heard you. We announced a change in AP style at the @ACESEditors conference today: It's now healthcare, one word, in all uses. We also changed childcare and daycare, closing them up to one word rather than two. This guidance is live on AP Stylebook Online now.

Days after the president blasted the Pope as “weak on Crime,” his own DOJ moved to dismiss criminal cases against individuals convicted of conspiring to use force to prevent the peaceful transfer of power. Some of the conduct for which Rhodes was convicted:

In almost a quarter of a century of studying the politics of crime in America, I have seen the soft-on-crime attack leveled on a range of politicians. But I did not expect to see it used against the Pope. I guess the Pope can expect a Willie Horton-style attack ad next.

This is a really positive step forward for closing Rikers that was delayed unnecessarily by the last admin. Now hundreds of people with serious medical needs will be held in a hospital setting rather than at Rikers.
STATEMENT from the Campaign to #CloseRikers on the much-needed opening of outposted therapeutic housing units at Bellevue Hospital. We know these units will save lives, and we thank @NYCMayor for prioritizing true community safety.
