Former Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Vietnam and Hungary, author/editor of two books on India-Nepal Relations

New Delhi, India
Such a lovely story
It’s a bird … it’s a plane … it’s the Indian ambassador’s farewell tweets For just over four years, India's ambassador to Nepal @navsri6619 was among the most closely observed residents of Kathmandu. But it turns out that in all that time, nobody thought to ask his excellency what he was watching. @anilkathmandu and I have the scoop on how he spent his final weeks inside the embassy compound. kathmandupost.com/art-cultur…

I have written about the origin of this practice in my book Kathmandu Dilemma, page 8.
For 26 years, India has searched passengers at Kathmandu's international airport. Nepal can’t say why. Fascinating reporting by @Dahalmatrika4 on the screening, which has run since the IC814 hijacking in 1999. Here's what we found: There's a public record of the decision in New Delhi. But in Kathmandu, three separate government agencies say they can’t find a clear paper trail authorising the practice. An exclusive story for those who subscribe to Kantipur. ekantipur.com/news/2026/09/2…

Comprehensive article by @bantirani_patro on the importance of regional action on HADR issues in the context of the horrendous natural disaster in Nepal.
As is typical in South Asia, a regional HADR framework is nowhere to be seen in the Nepal floods. I report for @ThePrintIndia. Many thanks to @atahasnain53 @RanjitRae & @SohiniBose13 for their insights & recommendations👇

Excellent article on responsible governance in the Himalayas. My proposal: convene a summit meeting of Himalayan countries to provide political impetus for strengthening cooperation on all aspects and at all levels. ICIMOD could be the focal point. indianexpress.com/article/ex…

As more details emerge, worth comparing India’s response to Nepal’s 2015 earthquake and this week’s catastrophe. @RanjitRae has a great chapter in his memoir on the political context of the HADR op then explaining several success and problems. Some factors that might have played out differently this time: less triumphant tone of Indian media coverage, Nepal govt more guarded about accepting foreign aid, China upgraded stratcom. Yet uncertain: level of coordination between India and different partners (US, UK, EU, RU etc)

“Nepal’s real strength has always been its diversity. Its geography comprises the Himalayas, the Hills and the Tarai. Society is made up of neighbourhoods, where relationships were formed less by religion and more by everyday life.” @Kishore_chandra kathmandupost.com/columns/20…
OPINION: What it means to be a neighbour If we stop seeing someone as our neighbour and instead diminish them to just their identity, democracy will drift away from both our constitution and our neighbourhood. kathmandupost.com/columns/20… —by Chandrakishore

One of the great institutions of Nepal led by Dr Ram K Makaju Shreshta that India has also been proud to support.
My latest cover story featured in The Diplomat Nepal’s August 2026 issue examines the remarkable trajectory of #dhulikhelhospital, illustrating how a local initiative grew into a globally recognized institution. The Diplomat NepalDhulikhel Hospital diplomatnepal.com/cover-stor…

Open Letter from the Constitutional Conduct Group on Police Brutality in Delhi on 20 July 2026 to PM, HM , @LtGovDelhi, @CPDelhi "The members of the Constitutional Conduct Group demand: (i) An independent judicial inquiry into the police action of 20 July 2026, including the use of pellet guns and shock batons in Delhi; (ii) Immediate suspension of and departmental action against officers responsible for ordering and using disproportionate force and impermissible techniques; (iii) Unconditional release of any detained students, medical care for all injured, and compensation for all those injured in the police action in proportion to the seriousness of their injuries; (iv) Immediate initiation of structured dialogue with student representatives on examination reforms, accountability of NTA, and long-term changes in the education system; (v) Withdrawal of all police cases in respect of those protesters against whom there is no credible and independent evidence of committing any act of violence; and (vi) Review of Crowd Management Drill/Instructions on use of force in police academies and training schools, and psychological assessment of all candidates before recruitment in the police force. The government must remember that its primary duty is to serve the people, especially the youth who represent India’s demographic dividend. Repression will only deepen alienation. Dialogue and accountability are the hallmarks of a mature democracy. We urge you to uphold the Constitution in both letter and spirit. Restore faith in democratic institutions before it is too late.
