Patti and I are saddened by the news of Dolores Huerta’s passing.
Dolores was a very close personal friend and colleague with whom we worked for years on advancing social justice. We first worked with Dolores in 1976 during the farmworkers’ strike in San Joaquin County, where she bravely led the effort to improve working conditions for farmworkers.
Every moment of her extraordinary life was dedicated to improving the lives of working people.
Dolores’s determination to improve the conditions for working people brought her to Washington, D.C., where she and Patti marched hand-in-hand to improve the conditions for women.
Her work lives on through the Dolores Huerta Foundation and in the halls of Congress, where we will continue to work to make Dolores’s vision of workers’ rights a reality. I will never waver in my commitment to fighting for fair wages and safe, equitable working conditions for all workers.
Dolores also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and coined the rallying cry “Sí se puede,” a phrase that will live on with her memory.
Dolores’s life and memory will forever be a reminder of what can be accomplished through grit, determination, and, most importantly, a love for justice for all.
