Three children went to school yesterday and never came home.
They were 5, 8, and 11 years old. Their teacher was killed too, and another child and teacher are now fighting for their lives.
My heart is with every family whose world was shattered by this violence, with the students and teachers who survive with the memory of it, and with an entire community now grieving an unimaginable loss.
There is nothing that can be said to make this any less horrifying.
But there are actions that we can and must take.
We say we want to build a better life for our children. We say we want safer schools and safer communities. But none of that is possible if we keep refusing to address the number one cause of death for children and teens in this country.
This is a clear problem with clear solutions, and the only thing standing between our children and safety is the political will to do something about it.
I am fighting every single day for the common-sense gun safety measures that will let our kids go to school without fear, that will let people go to concerts, grocery stores, and houses of worship without hesitation, and that will make every community in this country safer.
We cannot accept this culture of gun violence as our new reality.
