The bulb in the overhead projector has blown. The Banda copier is out of ink. The big TV is playing up. The Coomber has gone off to be repaired. And now it's time for us to go too. Thank you for your company. It's meant more than you'll ever know. God bless you all. G&M ❤️

Once, there was a man. An ordinary man. The man had been a teacher for most of his life. When the time came to leave the career he loved, he had found it hard to adjust. One day, most unexpectedly, the world gave that man a new way to make a difference. And he felt blessed.

Parting Words #5: A Changed World In this thread, I'm going to reflect a little on the impact that the pandemic has had on children, educators & schools. I apologise at the outset if this is sensitive, particularly for those who have experienced loss, hardship or suffering. 🧵

Depending on your age, you either remember stamping coins in children's books as a teacher or colouring, labelling and adding them together as an infant. For anybody really young, coins are how we used to pay for things.

Margaret has been covering classes while teachers had their appraisal review meetings today. She was in Yr 2 first, then Reception & then Yr 1. "I've been up and down like a yo-yo, Geoff!" Margaret has never been a big fan of performance management. You can't measure "maverick".

In this morning's English lesson, Margaret taught Year 2 about homophones. In P.E. this afternoon, some of the children had forgotten their plimsolls. They ended up joining in with bear feet. Margaret will go over homophones again tomorrow.

How We Used To Live: The Staff Room In the old days, there was time each day for a nice cup of tea and a sit down. At morning break, teachers would enjoy a Kit Kat or maybe even a cigarette.

When there was a Citroën 2CV in every school car park...
In the 1970s and 1980s, it was compulsory for all schools to employ at least one teacher who drove a Citroën 2CV.

Going home for lunch... (It's seems like the stuff of folklore now.)
Do you remember when it was quite normal for children to go home from school for their lunch? (Some teachers would go home too!) A short walk or bike ride, lunch with a parent or two and maybe even a bit of TV before the afternoon session. I think the respite was very healthy.

Alas, today marks the end of our Retirement Tales. It's a wrench, saying goodbye, but the time is right to step away from social media. Before Margaret and I sign off, we'll be reposting some of our favourite threads from the last few years. We hope these will raise a smile...

22/ The challenges being faced by children and families, by educators and schools aren't just going to go away by themselves. Because what's needed more than anything else in education, as in so much of society, is change.
