Precision oncology has focused on the tumor. Is it time to put the patient at the center of patient-centered care?
With
@GRocqueMD and
@RyanNipp, we put together this figure in
@JCOOP_ASCO to share our thoughts on where we are today, when we think about precision oncology, and where we want to be in the future.
Look at where the patient is in each panel.
A: Tumor is at the center. Patient is off to the side.
B: Patient moves to the middle. We add PROs.
C: Patient is at the center. Everything else is around the patient: rumor biology is one part of the picture, along with aging or host biology, PROs that capture emotional and social health, environmental exposures, and the patient’s own goals and preferences... and perhaps AI can help us bring it all together... so we can personalize each person's risks and benefits.
This is whole-person precision oncology.
This is where we need to go.
But.. one thing stays the same in every panel... the team.
Medical, radiation, and surgical oncology.
Geriatric oncology and palliative care.
Nursing, pharmacy, and primary care.
Academic and community practices.
No one can see the whole person alone.
We have to do this together.
We have to do this as multidisplinary team.
