Those B scares. 😮‍💨 I still don't fully understand how I survived undergrad. Most people don't understand the mental pressure that comes with being a five pointer, especially once you cross the 200 level mark. At that point, nothing else matters. People try to relate by comparing it to getting a C or a D. But to a five pointer at that stage, a B feels like an F. Yes, an F. Because the goal is no longer to graduate with a First Class. The goal is to protect that 5.00, every single semester, every single course. That's why I'm so glad Francis made it through. Maintaining a CGPA like that takes more than brilliance. It takes mental fortitude and real resilience. Congratulations again, Francis. You earned every bit of this. 🎉
Congratulations @Francis_TheMath 👏

This is nice. For me it was like, I have had enough Bs no more grades less than A, I had to stick to making As (5.0s) in subsequent semesters till Graduation..

I remember my early days of applying for fully funded opportunities. One complaint that kept coming up from a very good friend who painstakingly reviewed my essays was that I was always too humble in the way I presented myself. He corrected me over and over again: “You have done this. Say it. Own it.” Eventually, I learned. The competition in the world is fierce, and as a Nigerian, I have learned that I cannot afford to be unnecessarily modest in my applications. I can be humble in my daily life, that is my aspiration but an application is not the place to downplay my work, impact, or milestones. Nigerians have incredibly strong profiles. Apply for many highly competitive fully funded programs and you will almost certainly see Nigerian names among the finalists and awardees. So I learned to come with my full chest. I needed the confidence to clearly articulate what I have done, the value I bring, and why I deserve to be considered. Humility in applications was never the way to go. It took me time to learn that.

Till today, I still always feel First class starts from 4.8+.
I also agree that 4.80 CGPA now looks ordinary in today's Best Graduating Student landscape. The competition now starts from 4.9something. I can't compete. I am happy being a spectator and clapping.

Memories 🥺 This happened during my time, and ours was crazy. We were both from the same department! There was a rumour that only one of us would give the speech, and that course units would be used to decide who. I had more course units, so things were already leaning my way. I had been asked to prepare the speech, and I had even done the first rehearsals. But it didn't sit right with me. We had both earned that moment. Thankfully, the then Communications Lead at the University felt the same way. We talked it through, and she took the matter to the authorities. They agreed, and that is how both of us ended up delivering the speech together. @A_D_Haroun is quiet here, but this is a shout out to him too. He is a great person and a genuinely amazing soul. He really did push then for the Governor's meeting. I'm glad we shared that stage. To anyone upcoming BGS's who finds themselves in a similar position: fight for what is right, even when the outcome already favours you. Fairness is worth standing up for.
Please, I have a question. You know in football, if Man City and Arsenal finish the Premier League season with 99 points each, goal difference will determine who wins the trophy. Now, let’s bring it to academics. If two or more students graduate with a perfect 5.0 CGPA, how does the university decide who becomes the Best Graduating Student? Will they all be awarded BGS, or is there an academic equivalent of goal difference?

To be Valedictorian of any University is now hard as hell, 4.9 doesn’t cut it any longer, nowadays, you need as high as 5.0/5.0 CGPA. The Uniilorin valedictorian has 5.0 CGPA too, imagine studying so hard, graduating 4.97/5.00, yet, ain’t the Best Graduating Student, the bar’s raised. Problem ti wa bayi ooo, these kids ain’t playing, a good time to be alive if you ask me, God bless the current crop of Varsity lecturers in Nigeria these days for being lenient enough to leave the grades as it is.

Scary times in academia. Your 4.97 or 4.99 might not be enough to become the BGS. 🫩 The standard now is 5.0.
