Paul Mathias Padua portrayed Benito Mussolini three times. In February 1945 Italian dictator Benito Mussolini sat for a Padua portrait. ‘When I finished the picture of Il Duce he looked long and hard at it, then at me. He told me it was the best portrait if himself he’d ever seen, but that he was afraid it was also his last… He was killed two months later’,
Paul Mathias Padua Benito Mussolini, 1941

Edward John Burra (1905 – 1976) War in the Sun (1938) Bal des Pendus (Dance of the Hanged Men) (1937) The British artist E. Burra painted and lived in Spain but had to flee back to England when the Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936. The violence, terror, and social unrest he witnessed and followed from afar deeply darkened his style, shifting his work away from earlier satirical humor into macabre, uncompromising commentaries on war.
