Screening in 35mm as part of our Screaming Mad George retrospective: roxycinemanewyork.com/screen…
as a faithful Screen Slate reader I've come to accept NYC's place as the greatest film city despite great loyalty to L.A. where I spent my 20s, but respectfully, neither place has anything on Newark Public Library tonite, shorts on abandoned movie theaters & haunted hospitals!
Recently took some measures to address bots, listings scraping, and AI training. It's been a few days and not seeing any real problems, but give me a heads up if you notice any issues accessing the site!
Looked through the archives and discovered that our upcoming shows of Big Trouble in Little China Nov. 3 & 4 at @RoxyCinemaNYC are the first 35mm screenings in nearly 10 years. (Last was in 2017.) Don't miss it! roxycinemanewyork.com/screen…
The Devils re-release doubled the box office of Digger on a fraction of the screens, and it's biggest marketing cost was allegedly the $600 billboard (which is probably not true, but...). Even with the costs of the restoration, striking prints, staff overhead, it's a big win.
Also significant that this is not Casablanca or Singin' in the Rain, but a movie that was considered a stain on the WB's reputation. As a result I think we could more studios mining their back-catalogs for niche (by Casablanca standards) titles w prestige restoration treatments.
They also did the restoration right. Everything I read about the careful, respectful choices they made checked out—vs the aggressive tinkering & 3D post-conversions of T2 and Pan's Labyrinth. It also outgrossed T2 and will probably overtake Pan.
20 years from now there's gonna be a "Fall of '26" series that shows Harlem, Concrete, Digger, Primetime, YCSE, NAZA, The Devils uncut, and Resident Evil, plus The Social Reckoning, which misguided young people will for some reason argue is the true misunderstood masterpiece.
University of Alaska Fairbanks student Graham Granger was arrested after allegedly eating at least 57 AI generated images from a campus art exhibit.
The exhibit featured 160 images by fine arts student Nick Dwyer, and Granger was charged with fifth degree criminal mischief.

On @NicolasRapold's podcast, I discuss Resident Evil lore; Screaming Mad George; and many issues related to corporate repertory, AI-powered engagement-baiting accounts like "Occupy Cinema," and attempts to exploit & institutionalize microcinemas.
