Hosted by Gabe Feldman, Director of the Tulane Sports Law Program. SportsWise analyzes news in the sports world and tells the legal story behind the headlines.

“We propose a number of things that effectively would incentivize teams … including directly losing or forfeiting some revenue sharing if they didn't reach certain payroll levels … There’s a penalty right now for spending too much. Why shouldn't there be some consequence for spending too little?”  During his appearance on SportsWise with Professor Gabe Feldman, Bruce Meyer — the Interim Executive Director of the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) — discussed his ideas for incentivizing MLB owners to invest a greater amount into their franchises. Meyer also spoke about current player solidarity in the MLBPA and how ongoing negotiations of the league’s collective bargaining agreement may impact the 2027 MLB season. “The league's proposal would actually reduce overall player compensation by billions of dollars over the course of an agreement … [The cap] doesn't include all forms of revenue, number one. Number two, it's net of billions of dollars in expenses far beyond what you see, even in the other sports that have salary caps. So now sharing 50%, they're sharing 50% of a defined term of revenues.”  During his appearance on SportsWise with Professor Gabe Feldman, Bruce Meyer — the Interim Executive Director of the Major League Baseball Players Association — discussed why MLB owners want a salary cap and why its implementation would harm MLB players. Meyer also discussed competitive balance in MLB and how ongoing negotiations of the league’s collective bargaining agreement may impact the 2027 MLB season. “The league's strategy is, and has always been, to wait and delay and put pressure on players … A lockout in December, they’re going to do it. I’d be shocked if they didn’t. And then, they’re going to wait to see if players are going to crack. Our players never have and they won't and hopefully, when the league sees that, we’ll get serious and have a real negotiation. But it’s going to take a while.”  During his appearance on SportsWise with Professor Gabe Feldman, Bruce Meyer — the Interim Executive Director of the Major League Baseball Players Association — discussed the likelihood of a lockout in MLB and the impact it would have on the 2027 MLB season. Meyer also spoke about competitive balance across the league and why MLB’s salary cap proposal would negatively impact players.  Episode Link: sportswisepod.com/the-loomin…

“(Student-athletes) have been part of the hearing process. They’re part of the President’s Commission. We built on the House settlement, which was negotiated in court with athletes against the NCAA … So, there’s a lot in here that just never existed before … I think it is a really good effort to try to make sure student athletes are protected.” During his appearance on SportsWise with Professor Gabe Feldman, United States Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Missouri) discussed how he believes the Protect College Sports Act (PCSA) would stabilize college athletics and provide it with a path forward. “Coaching salary is outside the rev share (portion) of the House settlement, which made it a thing, but we did try to acknowledge it. There's the Lane Kiffin rule, as it's been referred to, that you can't leave mid-season and go somewhere else. So, I think that is an important protection for student athletes and programs and states.” During his appearance on SportsWise with Professor Gabe Feldman, United States Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Missouri) discussed how the Protect College Sports Act (PCSA) looks to address matters involving college football coaches. “It’s not an exact science, but I do think it provides transparency and structure. It can also, by the way, be revisited down the road. I also think you’re going to see some of these conference TV contracts come up in the next four or five years. We’re going to see where it’s at also and then, that number will grow as far as the rev share piece.”  During his appearance on SportsWise with Professor Gabe Feldman, United States Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Missouri) discussed the benefits of the roster spending limit framework proposed in the Protect College Sports Act (PCSA), while acknowledging that it could be updated in the future. “... As it turns out, ($45 million or $50 million) is where we ended up here with the $21.5 million House settlement number that people have allegedly been abiding by (and) a $22.5 million retention pool for players that are on your rosters. So, you combine that with the one-time transfer, you’re going to have much more stability … and that helps programs across the country. And then, (there is) a $5 million number that doesn’t count against your cap if it’s for women’s sports.”  During his appearance on SportsWise with Professor Gabe Feldman, United States Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Missouri) discussed how the roster spending limit framework proposed in the Protect College Sports Act (PCSA) could benefit college athletics and reflects the current market. “What’s going to happen if we don’t do something is that women’s sports, Olympic sports (and) non-revenue sports will just start to go away. There’s 500,000 college athletes out there right now. They don’t all play in the SEC or the Big Ten and they don’t all go to the pros, but it’s provided a lot of opportunities for a lot of people and you don’t want to see that go away.” During his appearance on SportsWise with Professor Gabe Feldman, United States Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Missouri) discussed why he believes the Protect College Sports Act (PCSA) provides a federal legislative solution to the issues impacting college sports. “What I really have learned is if you’re going to get something in politics, you have to give something up. And so, there’s no kind of perfect kind of bill in that regard and (the Protect College Sports Act) would fit right into that understanding because it’s not perfect. But what I do like about it is some things I think are really important … Codifying the eligibility (aspect) is really important and ensuring that the NCAA can govern that.”  During his appearance on SportsWise with Professor Gabe Feldman, Sun Belt Conference Commissioner Keith Gill discussed his perspective on the Protect College Sports Act. Gill also spoke about the success of the Sun Belt in recent years, how the conference aims to stay competitive in the rapidly changing college athletics landscape and his thoughts on potentially expanding the College Football Playoff.  Episode Link: sportswisepod.com/more-colle…

“It’s really expensive. We’re fighting and clawing for every dollar to support the programs … But the reality from where I sit is, I don’t really anticipate … us not having an ability to compete. Alabama’s always been Alabama and we’ve always been us, right? And so, I think we found a way to compete. We found a way to figure it out.” During his appearance on SportsWise with Professor Gabe Feldman, Sun Belt Conference Commissioner Keith Gill discussed the current challenges facing college athletics and how he sees the Sun Belt keeping up with rising costs, while also still staying competitive on the field. Gill also spoke about the possibility of expanding the College Football Playoff and his thoughts on the Protect College Sports Act.  Episode Link:  sportswisepod.com/more-colle…

“We need to make sure we understand how (playoff expansion) impacts the regular season. We need to make sure we understand how it impacts our conference championship games … So yes, we are for expansion. 24 (teams) is great, but we want to explore it (and) understand the details before we would totally commit to it.” During his appearance on SportsWise with Professor Gabe Feldman, Sun Belt Conference Commissioner Keith Gill discussed the Sun Belt’s perspective on expanding the College Football Playoff.
