Jacko is my first son” Did you catch Arwa sharing her and Jacko’s story on ITV News this weekend? 🐕 It’s all part of a powerful new children’s book by award winning children’s author, Jeanne Willis and illustrator Alice Larsson, written for St Mungo’s. On Friday 9th October, we celebrated 20 years of Homeless Diamonds magazine by launching our special exhibition at the Old Diorama Arts Centre in London. Homeless Diamonds began in 2006 as a way for people experiencing homelessness to share their writing, artwork, ideas and experiences. Twenty years later, the magazine continues to provide a platform for creative expression, celebrating the voices and talents of people across St Mungo's and beyond. Our launch was full or artwork, lively conversations, speeches, poetry and music performances and some great food too. Hearing from our artists how much the exhibition meant to them was a reminder of the importance of creating opportunities for self-expression and recognition of client voice and experiences. We want to publicly thank the Old Diorama Arts Centre for the space and their hospitality. A selection of artwork from the launch will remain on public display downstairs at Old Diorama Arts Centre until 20th November 2026 A huge thank you to our corporate sponsors Regular Cleaning for very generously providing art store vouchers for all the artists, and amazing food provided by Clink!

“On World Homeless Day in 2036, we should be able to look back on a decade when we finally redesigned our systems to support people before they were pushed into homelessness.” St Mungo’s CEO, Emma Haddad, speaks to Inside Housing about the need to put prevention first. Today is World Homeless Day. Over the past year, St Mungo's outreach teams have met nearly 10,000 people sleeping rough across London and the South of England. While the challenge remains significant, this is also a moment of opportunity. Together with partners, government and communities, we can help more people find lasting routes off the streets and work towards preventing homelessness before it happens. Thank you to everyone working on the frontline to rebuild lives every day. #WorldHomelessDay #Homelessness #Charity

For a long time, many people in supported accommodation have faced a benefits cliff edge that meant taking work or increasing their hours could leave them worse off. As Universal Credit reduced and Housing Benefit was withdrawn more sharply, people could struggle to cover their rent, which could put them at risk of homelessness again. From today, working age people in supported housing or temporary accommodation will benefit from new calculations in their entitlement, allowing them to earn more before their Housing Benefit starts to reduce. Alongside homelessness sector partners @centrepointuk and Depaul as well as many others, this change is something that St Mungo’s has long advocated for, and this significant step will potentially prevent over 325,000 people from being left worse off by working more. More than 1,500 people that St Mungo’s supported in 2025-26 were enrolled into our learning, training and employment programmes to improve their skills and confidence before entering the world of work. This change will allow more people to use those skills, which we know has positive impacts on their health and wellbeing and increases connection with communities, all of which are vital steps in the recovery from homelessness. mungos.org/news/celebrating-…

In 2025, 1,720 people sadly lost their lives while experiencing homelessness, a 6.8% increase from 2024, according to preliminary findings from the Museum of Homelessness. Homelessness can take many forms, whether that’s someone who’s rough sleeping, or living in an insecure living arrangement such as sofa surfing, or temporary accommodation, all of these people are represented in these statistics. From his first day as Prime Minister, Andy Burnham has placed addressing homelessness and ending rough sleeping high on the national agenda. With over 76,000 households in England assessed as homeless or at risk of homelessness, and nearly 4,800 people estimated to be sleeping rough on a single night, there is significant work to do, requiring robust social, strategic and legislative change. The commitment to offer a route off the streets for everyone sleeping rough by Christmas, alongside a long term, housing led programme, is ambitious. But by taking bold action now, this could turn emergency action into lasting, sustainable change. As always, we stand ready to work with the government to deliver this once in a generation commitment, sharing our clients’ voices and experiences, as well as best practice from our dedicated frontline teams and specialist services to influence meaningful policy and action. 🏠 Burnham's greatest challenge will be sustaining this ambition and galvanising action across government, local government and wider society to address the root causes of homelessness. We stand ready to work with the Government this winter and beyond, to make that ambition a reality.
