CEO Met Capital | Director ACR Institute I write about Russia, power, AI, markets and Western survival. Follow if you prefer brutal clarity to polite stupidity.

The West humiliated Russia in the 1990s. This war is the consequence.’ I’ve heard this in every language, from every podium. It is history rewritten backwards. Recall what actually happened to defeated Russia: no occupation. No reparations. No tribunal. It kept its nuclear arsenal and its UN veto. Its debts were forgiven and refinanced. It was handed IMF billions and a seat at the G8 — a club of democracies admitting a wounded autocracy out of hope. Now recall an actually humiliated nation: Germany, 1945. Occupied. Partitioned. Cities in ash, leaders hanged, guilt taught to its children by law. Germany became the most peaceful democracy in Europe. Russia became this. So spare me the humiliation theory. Russia was not humiliated after the Cold War. It was indulged — and it read every kindness as weakness, every gift as tribute. The grievance was never mistreatment. The grievance was lost dominion. Empires do not mourn their wounds. They mourn their slaves.

April 2008: Georgia and Ukraine ask NATO for a membership plan. Berlin and Paris say: not yet. August 2008: Russia invades Georgia. 2022: Russia invades Ukraine. "Not yet" is the most expensive phrase in NATO's history.

"Demilitarisation." One of Putin's stated war aims, February 2022. 2023: Finland joins NATO. 2024: Sweden joins NATO. In Kremlin language, demilitarisation means NATO on your doorstep.

To everyone who calls Ukrainian refugees a burden: In one night Russia knocked three power plants offline and cut Kyiv's water. People don't leave home for benefits. They leave because someone bombs the water.

One night, 2–3 November: 289 drones. 17 ballistic missiles. 59 cruise missiles. Kharkiv: a cardiology ward hit, 73 injured. Kyiv: water cut. Three thermal power plants offline. New US military aid packages this year: none significant (Al Jazeera). Europe is paying the bill. America is reading it.

Ukraine's industrial output in September: 9.2% below a year earlier. Russia has hit its mining and metals plants at least 30 times this year. Who pays: Ukraine's export economy, the part that earns the money to fight. Who profits: Moscow, whose stated aim is to cut Ukraine's economy off from Europe (ISW). Verdict: bearish on Ukrainian industrial output into Q1 2027 unless air defence arrives. High conviction.

Witkoff: next week's Abu Dhabi talks will cover "post-war security arrangements." Overnight, Russia fired 289 drones, 17 ballistic missiles and 59 cruise missiles at Ukraine. Someone should tell Moscow the war is "post."

4 November 1956: Soviet tanks crush the Hungarian revolution. About 2,500 Hungarians killed. 200,000 flee. 70 years later, Hungary's government is the one blocking Ukraine's EU accession talks. Budapest has forgotten what Moscow's tanks look like. Kyiv hasn't.

To everyone who says "stop sending weapons and the war will end": 2 November, Komyshuvakha. Russian bombs hit a school where aid was being handed out. Then nine guided bombs hit the shelter people ran to. 29 dead. 48 missing. That's what a Ukraine without weapons looks like.

Russia's week of humanitarian diplomacy: 31 October: Moscow claims a deal with Kyiv on regular humanitarian missions. 1 November: 332 drones and loitering munitions by day (ISW). That night: 193 more. Next on the calendar: talks in Abu Dhabi. Talks scheduled. Bombs delivered.

Putin just signed a decree forcing private Russian data centres to reserve capacity for the state (ISW). This comes after Ukrainian drones knocked out Yandex's. Who pays: every private Russian cloud and AI business, whose servers now belong partly to the Kremlin. Who profits: nobody who has a choice about where to host. Verdict: bearish on Russian private cloud and AI operators into 2027. High conviction.
