Iraq War Veteran Ron DeSantis says it was a mistake to try overseas nation building in Iraq but at least it was debated unlike Trump’s War in Iran.
“I served in the Iraq war as a naval officer, and I learned a lot from that experience because, this idea that we were going to create a Western-style democracy in the Middle East, in the heart of an Islamic country, once I spent about 15 minutes on the ground in Fallujah, I knew that was a fool's errand. That was just not going to happen.
And so I, as an elected official, have always been skeptical of foreign adventurism, certainly don't want to do any nation-building or any of that stuff. But having said that, in the lead-up to Iraq, Bush was out on the campaign trail, he went to Congress, there was a public debate, a lot of Democrats voted for it, and it became very unpopular, and obviously there were a lot of issues and problems with it, 100%. But I don't think there was really much of a debate about Iran, it just kind of happened, and then people thought it was going to end after like a week or two, and then it didn't, and then you had this issue with oil, oil supplies, and all these other things that have caused individual Americans, you know, to have pain at the pump.”
