From Technology Development to Real-World Implementation 🌍
What does it take to move a promising sanitation technology from prototype to a solution that works in the field, at scale?
On 2 October 2026, T-Works participated in the Upstream R&D Network Development Workshop, hosted by the Gates Foundation in Glasgow, UK.
🌐 The workshop brought together researchers, universities, sanitation innovators, industry partners, and market experts from across the global sanitation ecosystem. Through technical presentations, knowledge exchange, and collaborative discussions, participants explored emerging sanitation technologies, shared R&D progress, identified technical gaps, and examined pathways to bring innovations closer to real-world application.
🤝 The session “From Technology Development to Real-World Implementation,” connected international R&D teams with India's sanitation market context and indigenous technology capabilities.
The session focused on three key areas:
🇮🇳 Understanding India's sanitation market - exploring the needs of various market segments like public toilets, schools, residential developments, and institutions, including affordability, water reuse, space constraints, and operational requirements.
🔬Connecting technologies with real-world needs - Indian technology partners presented their solutions, available evidence, technical gaps, and areas where further R&D or collaboration could help address sanitation challenges.
⚙️Building pathways from R&D to implementation - T-Works outlined its capabilities in engineering, prototyping, system integration, and manufacturing, and how these can support technology development towards ISO 30500 readiness.
💡Across the workshop, a key message stood out: technical innovation alone is not enough. Understanding market needs, demonstrating performance under local conditions, ensuring manufacturability, and building the right partnerships are all essential to translating promising technologies into viable solutions at scale.
At T-Works, bridging the gap between R&D and implementation is central to our role in the WASH ecosystem. By bringing together technology developers, research institutions, and industry partners, we aim to help move sanitation innovations from development towards practical implementation and commercialisation.
🙏 Our sincere thanks to Dr. Marc Deshusses, Dr. Carl Hensman, Ms. Sakshi Gudwani, and the entire Gates Foundation team, along with all participating researchers, innovators, and industry partners, for making this valuable exchange possible.
The goal is not just to develop better technologies, but to make them work where they are needed most. 🌱
