When Dare Adeola and Olamide Onigbanjo set out to build UnibetaAI at the University of Lagos, they made the quintessential early-stage mistake: trying to build an “everything app.” The result? The outsourced mobile app arrived riddled with bugs, repeatedly failed Apple App Store and Google Play reviews, and nearly wiped out their savings. Onafriq, a digital payments network that operates across 40 African countries, is winding down Baxi, its Nigerian agent banking business, after five years, following what the company calls a review of its long-term strategy and sustainability.
