Saturday morning I woke up to panicked messages from a friend.
He’d been scammed. His bitcoin was gone.
It started with a call from someone claiming to be the RCMP. The phone number was spoofed to look legitimate. Then came a call from someone claiming to be Google.
In the panic, he gave them information that allowed them to access his accounts. He took a photo of his seed phrase, and once they got access, they found it and drained the wallet.
Please be careful out there.
Google is not going to call you asking for your password.
If someone claiming to be the RCMP, police, your bank, an exchange, or another company calls asking for personal information, hang up. Find the official number yourself and call them back.
Never give anyone your passwords, recovery codes, or seed phrase. And never store your seed phrase in your photos, email, cloud storage, or anywhere connected to the internet.
Bitcoin is a journey. You don’t have to figure out every part of it alone.
Ask for help before you act, especially when someone is creating urgency or fear.
