Five lessons I learned about coaching basketball from my high school coach, Al McFadyen, many years ago.
1. Don’t be afraid to build with youth. Keep an eye to the future.
2. Do something a little different than the other teams in your league.
Continue ⬇️⬇️ for 3,4,5.
3. If you have a good scorer, don't be afraid to use him as the focal point of your offense.
4. Aggressive players make up the best defensive teams.
5. Love all your players, win or lose, no matter what happens.
At my recent meeting with Dave Daily at Hudson Bay, Canada, he explained the 5 lines of a Dog Sled team, which I found had a lot in common with Basketball.🏀
Lead Dogs-2- your captains
Point Dogs-2- the point guards
Team Dogs-4- heavy load pullers
Wheel Dogs-2- toughest, focused
So, my thoughts on dog sleds and basketball for Coaches:
1. Do you have Leaders?
2. Do you have 2 point guards available?
3. Do you have 4 who will help pull the load?
4. Do you have 2 who are tough & focused?
In other words, “Do You Have Some Hungry Dogs?”
I recently visited Hudson Bay in Canada to see the Polar Bears.
One of my side visits was with Dave Daily, a renown Dog Sled Trainer.
His first comment about forming a Dog Sled Team was, “All 10 dogs must get along or it won’t work. A bad one ruins it all.”
Kinda like basketball?
10-0 after 5 in game 3 of the World Series in favor of the Brew Crew. Has a position player ever been used as a mop up pitcher in a World Series game before? Maybe this game?
Press Offense Video:
The 2-1-2 Spread from the Lane Assigned Fast Break.
5 man in the middle as a relay or relief pass or rim runner.
Passing rather than dribbling is the key vs Zone Pressure.
It is important to work vs full court pressure defenses for a short time early in each practice season, BUT…..
…… You need a simple approach that is easy to learn & use.
I made ours from our Lane Assigned Fast Break Attack using a 2-1-2 spread set with simple adjustments.
Preparing for early season Press Offense, I felt it was important to do a little every practice. BUT…..
I used a simple approach with our Running Game, assigning lanes, that shifted to a 2-1-2 spread setup, used slight adjustments for each defense, so it was easy to learn.
As pre season basketball practices are in full swing, one thing I like to remind Coaches to do:
Work 10 minutes on handling full court pressure. Every Day.
Do man press one day, zones on others, using various types so nothing will be a surprise to the team from game 1 on.
For some tips on the simpler approach to attacking all types of full court and half court pressure defenses, check out my popular Manual - “Don’t Press Your Luck.”

How do you encourage “Unselfish Play?”
You talk about it,
You encourage it,
You correct it when it’s not happening,
You praise it when it does happen.
Without it, you don’t have much of a chance to be the “best you can be.”
KEY TO A GOOD FAST BREAK:
A point guard who will pitch the ball ahead to open lane runners instead of dribbling up themselves all the time, is a key to getting teammates to run lanes. Use them or lose them.
The 1st thing you need as a young head coach is a Simple & Effective Man to Man Defensive System.
That’s how you build a winning program. Start with Stops! Defense should be more consistent than your Offense ever can be.
Simple Offensive Scheme is next & build from there.
JMO
Dre(mond) Greenlaw lost his head there in the 1st half against Seattle and got tossed from the game, hurting the defense some. But others seem to come through and the 49ers pulled out a win. Evans - Stud.
I guess that “Weather Schedule” the Red Sox & Cubs had last weekend did not do them much good in the playoffs last night.
A double header Friday, Saturday off to fly to Florida play a final game on Sunday.
Both teams got shut out big:
Yanks 9 - BoSox 0
Padres 8 - Cubs 0
The Cubs, with the NL MVP & the top offense in the NL, added 3 starting pitchers & their eventual closer at the trading deadline. They then went from 3 games behind the Brewers, with a home WC basically cinched, to 14 games behind the Brewers & a WC on the road in 2 months time.
What I observe in HS games about the Bigs:
1. There are some good Bigs out there, tall, athletic, good touch.
2. Most perimeter players are not looking inside to get Bigs the ball.
3. The Bigs’ footwork & moves are often lacking which results in low pct shots.

4. Bigs often take poor shots rather than passing back outside.
5. They don’t go to the offensive boards consistently & sometimes skip defensive boards too.
6. Bigs could be a lot more effective with some good coaching.
