Lecanemab - to be called Leqembi has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administrattin for those living with #dementia with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia. Good news for our community, still a lot of work to do on equity of access…

If you are prescribed hearing aids please wear them! Further evidence this month points to a correlation between correcting hearing problems and reduction in cognitive decline and eventually #dementia #hearingloss
More evidence of people with corrected hearing impairment's reduction in cognitive decline & dementia. Think our @TheLancet commision thelancet.com/article/S0140-… informed new policy of OTC hearing aids in USA. Now more people can have them. ja.ma/3Z8XREW via @JAMANeuro

This is something I have wanted to do from the first month I started at @AlzDisInt. It is so important as so many countries refuse to reimburse the few meds we have available. Those meds are now out of patent and affordable. Thanks to @LouiseProfessor @Knappem and @TheDrAtri
Today, alongside @UniofNewcastle & @CPEC_LSE, ADI submitted an application for anti-dementia medications to be included on @WHO's Essential Medicines List. We hope this will ensure people living with #dementia everywhere have equitable & affordable access to these medications.

Caution needed as usual, but the results just published on Lecanemab, a possible breaktrough therapy for the early stages of #alzheimers do look promising. For a full analysis look at our alzint.org later on. @TheDrAtri @AlzDisInt nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NE…

About 1 in 5 of us have an APOE4 gene variant, the #1 genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. But the mechanism for brain injury was a mystery, now getting unraveled (cholesterol processing by oligodendrocytes) nature.com/articles/s41586-0… @nature nature.com/articles/d41586-0…

Persons with #Parkinson disease were found to be at four times the risk of #dementia compared to sex and age matched persons w/o #Parkinsons using Swedish Registry data. PD is not just disease that impacts motor functions.
#Parkinsonsdisease is not only a movement disorder. Many patients experience non-motor symptoms, and it is often overlooked that individuals living with #Parkinsons are at greatly increased risk for #dementia. By how much? See our new paper doi.org/10.1038/s41598-022-2…

This was a stark reminder that we can reduce our own risks. This past week in the Global Regen CoLab, there have been conversations about deep thinking + meditation. Not always front of mind when humans are faced with many other priorities, but imagine the impact on hypertension.

WHO launches today an important initiative to sensitise governments to #brainhealth. #dementia and #alzheimers are part of this. It’s amazing that we still know so little about the brain and how it works, but I think this is why many governments have ignored this area for so long
Optimizing #BrainHealth 🧠 ▶️reduces the burden of neurological disorders ▶️improves mental + physical health ▶️creates positive social & economic impacts contributing to greater well-being, advancing society. 👉bit.ly/3dehrMz
