Harvest season at The Kernel Lab!
We joined Dr. Dan Quinn in the combine to discuss harvesting research plots at Purdue's Water Quality Field Research Station and how excessive rainfall affected corn yields this season. Watch until the end for Dr. Quinn's combine cab essentials!
Our recent WISH-TV interview with Dr. Dan Quinn is now available! 🎥
He discussed corn research at Purdue University and how it helps address crop management questions for Indiana farmers. 🌽

Last week, @PurdueCorn, assistant professor of corn production in @PurdueAgronomy, spoke with @WISHNews8 about @LifeatPurdue's innovative corn research and how it helps identify the needs of Indiana’s farming community. 🌽
Thank you WISH-TV for visiting our fields, harvesting plots and labs to get a behind-the-scenes look at how our faculty and students are turning research into meaningful insights for farmers.

August storms in East-Central Indiana caused flooding and wind damage, with water above corn ears in some areas. Dr. Dan Quinn observed multiple ear rots and premature kernel sprouting (vivipary) in submerged ears.
🚨 New from The Kernel Lab! 🌽
Can narrower rows help when pushing seeding rates?
20-in (51-cm) rows enhanced yield at 3 of 4 site-years, and the response to seeding rate was more pronounced under narrow spacing at two site-years.

New from Crop Protection Network: research-based guidance on hail injury and fungicide decisions in corn, co-authored by CORN Network member Dr. Dan Quinn. 🌽
Congrats to @PurdueAgronomy's @PurdueCorn, named the Indiana Corn Marketing Council’s Extension specialist in agronomy!
The @INCornFarmers's honor recognizes his leadership in corn research, Extension, education and his commitment to farm-based research, advancing Indiana agriculture. 🌽

🌽 Timing matters when managing foliar diseases in corn.
Drs. Daniel Quinn and Darcy Telenko discuss how well-timed fungicide applications can extend grain fill, increase kernel weight, and ultimately contribute to higher yields.

Earlier this week, Dr. Dan Quinn shared ongoing research on nitrogen loss and management during the Pinney Purdue Agricultural Center Field Day.
The discussion covered common N loss mechanisms and research evaluating nitrogen inhibitors.
Thanks to everyone who joined us!🌽
Another thing to consider this year on top of all the rainfall we have had is the persistent cloudy days and lack of sunlight. Here is a snapshot of solar radiation data over the last 3 weeks in central Indiana in comparison to the last 5 years.

🌽Putting crop scouting skills to the test!
Last week, The Kernel Lab joined the Indiana Youth Crop Scouting Competition.
At our station, students tackled corn growth staging, potential crop injury and yield impacts, and grain yield estimation.

🌽How much defoliation can corn tolerate before yield declines?
This week we completed manual defoliation treatments with 33%, 66%, and 99% leaf removal in both short- and tall-stature corn hybrids.
This photo shows the 99% defoliation treatment at R1.
