'The agents of technocapital, into whose ranks Hassabis has been conscripted, imagine themselves as the new saviours of humanity, the new bringers of fire. Each imagines himself a little postmodern Prometheus. But Prometheus was punished.' – Joey Connolly

To compare any new novel to Ulysses is always a bit unhinged but in this case it is justified… the fun Blakemore has with language is entirely Joycean. Read the full piece below
'The book's bathetic doubling between high and low, then and now, the world-historical and the fleeting, is remarkably well balanced, and recalls the linguistic ebullience and brilliance of James Joyce’s Ulysses.'

I wrote about Dylan Thomas's 1951 trip to Iran. Little has changed 75 years on: the fight for oil, the immiserating sanctions, the naval blockade, the threat of invasion from the south, and the timeless claim that Iranians are irrational for objecting.
'He spends much of his letters from Iran begging his wife to forgive his various infidelities. What’s sometimes lost in this personal story is that he had arrived in Iran at an extraordinary time.'
