Feeling terrible for a multibillion dollar company
Feeling terrible for the Rockstar Games team right now. Another event soured by leaks, just 9 days before launch.

The leaker is fighting for gamers' rights
Cyberleek, the person behind the alleged GTA 6 map and gameplay video leak has stated in page that he will not stop until Rockstar Games issues a public statement and apology with a concrete commitment to be better. "No consumer shall pay for a game through digital storefronts before release and independent review. Physical preorders for tangible media remain permitted. Preorders were not created for gamers. They were created because physical discs had manufacturing limits. In digital distribution, there is no inventory. There is no stock shortage. A digital copy cannot sell out. Yet publishers kept the preorder system and stripped away its only consumer benefit. Now gamers pay early and receive nothing in return except a countdown timer and a cosmetic skin. If publishers want revenue before launch, they can press discs. Print boxes. Put them on shelves. Earn that money through physical production" Another quote seen from the GTA 6 leaked map says "Fighting for gamers' rights" Its evident that the whole reason behind those leaks are the decision to ship GTA 6 without a physical copy, making GTA 6 the one game that got leaked the most during its development time. What is going to be more interesting to see however is if more leaks are going to happen because of this, no one can tell how much info or leaked footage Cyberleek has to share.

RIP. They just killed physical games, because they don't want you to own anything. - Sony is done making discs. - Next XBOX won't even have a drive. They'll cut all the printing, packaging, and shipping costs, but still charge us $70+ for a download. "Consumer preferences are changing" is BS. This is about removing the only leverage we gamers have left. Think about it. Right now if a digital game is $70, you have options: - check local retailers - buy a used copy on eBay - borrow it from a friend Physical retail creates competition. It forces PlayStation and Xbox to run sales to compete with the used market. Once the disc drive dies, that competition will die with it. They will own 100% of the distribution pipeline. If they want a 4-yo game to stay at $70, it stays at $70. Zero alternatives. It’s literally a total monopoly, but they're selling it to us as "convenience" And don't even get me started on game preservation. When we buy digital, we're just renting a temporary license until some corporate spreadsheet decides the server costs aren't worth it anymore. We already know the PS3 and Vita stores are on death row. PC is starting to look like the only place left where we actually have choices. Yeah it's 100% digital too but at least Steam, Epic, and GOG have to compete with each other. On console we're just trapped...

Did EA acquire Rockstar? Because GTA VI is locking 5 whole shops behind the $100 Ultimate Edition. On top of the other bonuses, these 5 spots are literally "only open for business" if you pay up: - Stock 305 Clothing Store - Sara's Unisex Hair Salon - Rideout Customs Mod Shop - One Eyed Willie's Mod Shop - Electric Fang Tattoo Shop Paying for cosmetics is standard, but locking physical, interactive locations in the open world behind a paywall? That breaks the vibe. You will inevitably drive past doors that are only "closed" because you didn't swipe your credit card, and realize the "open" world isn't fully open to you. Is this the new normal for AAA gaming now?

Which GTA cover art is the best? Be honest.
Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI will officially begin on June 25 on digital storefronts and at other select retailers. Check out the official cover art, also available as downloadable artwork at rockstargames.com/VI

> Pay $70 for the game > Deal with microtransactions > Still get exposed to ads They’ll monetize the fuck out of us, sell our attention to advertisers, and look us dead in the eye and say "games cost too much to make" Why am I paying a premium price tag if you're gonna treat it like a F2P game? If ingame ads are meant to make up for rising AAA dev costs, shouldn't the base price of the game drop? (Spoiler: It won't.) Modern ad tech built into game engines actively monitors your positioning, movement speed, and camera angles to measure exactly how many seconds your crosshair hovered on a specific brand. The dystopian shit is that EA has already filed patents for a mood-based targeting system: - Just lost a FIFA match in the 90th minute? The engine knows you're mad and serves a specific ad. - Just won a game? You get a different ad tailored to an endorphin spike. Sure, they’re starting with sports games. Real stadiums have ads, so they can easily say "it enhances realism!" We're already used to seeing realworld sponsors in EAFC and Madden, so we're way more likely to just accept it. But today it's banners in EAFC, tomorrow it's billboards in Battlefield. And unlike skins or microtransactions (which you can at least try to ignore) these environmental ads are permanently slapped onto the world you're playing in. Game worlds are built for creative purposes. If you see a billboard in a game, it's because an artist put it there for worldbuilding, not because an ad division sold that space to Nike. But soon, level designers and environment artists are going to be pressured to find ways to cram branded content into their maps without pissing people off. It'll shift the priority from "what makes this fun to play?" to "where can we stick a McDonalds ad so the player stares at it?" We've officially reached the point where games aren't even products. They're just tools designed to squeeze every last drop of value out of you. $70 entry fee + battle pass + cosmetics + now a literal ad network on top... Where do we finally draw the line?
EA launched new EA Advertising team that will add ads to their games, starting in Sports titles "Integrate directly into gameplay through dynamic, real-time placements, from stadium signage to custom in-game content, designed to enhance, not disrupt, the player experience"

When done right, well-picked product placements (such as the Omega watches in 007 First Light) don't bother me too much personally, although I still don't like knowing I'm shown ads. But at the very least, they are handmade items that 100% fit the world. However, EA is about to put dedicated ad areas in the maps showing dynamic ads. Like this billboard below in BF 2042 but changing realtime depending on your engagement metrics. It's like website ads. Also as we move forward, I'm sure they'll add them to their games regardless it takes place in a modern setting or not, so we'll see that same Monster ad in UFC in Dead Space or Dragon Age, for instance.
