The city in these paintings is empty and it is dusk, or something like dusk. A color that doesn't quite belong to any hour, magenta bleeding into cobalt, a violet that has no source you can point to in the sky. The buildings are rendered with a precision so exacting it borders on obsession: every window, every setback, every cornice accounted for, traced and cut and stenciled and filled until nothing is left to chance. And yet nothing moves... the-unibrow.com/daily-brows/…

"...instead of looking for mysticism in the world beyond me as I normally do, I began looking around the house, noticing all the magical objects in the home we take for granted." — #ArianaPapademetropoulos, The Unibrow, Issue 03 the-unibrow.com/stories/pain…

By transforming not only the painting as a medium but the image itself into a sculpting material, August Sai emphasizes the importance of “seeing through the neutral eye of nature rather than the eye of culture,” as the exhibition text suggests. While getting lost in the vortex of my IG feed the other day, I came across an image of #AugustSai’s work from his first show with Tütar gallery in Tallinn, #Estonia. Seeing archetypal Madonna- or Northern Renaissance-type sitters with strips of peeled-off portraits coming out of their eye sockets or mouths made me stop in my tracks and look into the artist and practice I wasn’t familiar with. the-unibrow.com/daily-brows/…

That Manet is the key, really. One of Salman Toor’s best-known paintings, “The Bar on East 13th(2019),” is his answer to “A Bar at the Folies-Bergère,” and now the two hang under the same roof. the-unibrow.com/daily-brows/…

“In general, I do what I’m told. By that I mean, something tells me what to do, and I follow it. You don’t really know where it’s going at first. You start moving, and over time, it reveals how it wants to be…” —Kiki Smith, Issue 02 the-unibrow.com/interviews/k…

That, to me, the whole essence of #SalmanToor isn't that he borrows imagery from Old Masters; he borrows their questions. His show at @TheCourtauld is one of the best of 2026. Read our review ---> the-unibrow.com/daily-brows/…

"She’s smoking and she’s lost in thought, but she’s completely sexy in her imperfections. And I think that’s where I try to find peace with my own disturbances of what I see in the world." #DanielleMckinney, The Unibrow Issue 03 the-unibrow.com/interviews/d…

Driven by the challenge of capturing what he saw or experienced, #KristofSanty kept expanding the scope of his reference imagery and the ways and tools he could wield to represent it. Completely removed from storytelling, his entire practice boils down to an interest in how to paint something, and in how many ways there are to paint it. the-unibrow.com/daily-brows/…
