Very happy to be part of the nominating committee for the Gothams. Imani Davis, Jon Frosch, Illyse Singer, Esther Zuckerman and I tackled Original and Adapted Screenplay
Calling all critics, voters, and list-makers! My annual feature tracking the films getting awards-qualifying runs is up.
This will be updated through December. If you are a distributor and your run is not listed here, get in touch.
Like many people watching NFL games right now, I just saw this "Full of Hate" ad from America Next that argues that "Liberals are the new racists." It's so pathetic. Imagine knowing someone who actually believes this nonsense.
I disliked JOJO RABBIT without completely loathing it. But Taika Waititi's KLARA AND THE SUN is the worst kind of sentimental, quirky/cutesy drivel. latimes.com/entertainment-ar…
I like that DC Studios takes some chances with its dark, gory villain origin story CLAYFACE. But there's a reason why most moviegoers aren't familiar with this subpar character. screendaily.com/reviews/clay…
Like the expert thief he plays, John Turturro brings a marvelous sense of precision to the melancholy thriller THE ONLY LIVING PICKPOCKET IN NEW YORK. screendaily.com/reviews/the-…
Fresh off his Tony win, Alden Ehrenreich impresses as a Tom Ripley-like figure in A TALENT FOR MURDER. But this Highsmith-ian thriller ends up dead on arrival. screendaily.com/reviews/a-ta…
We mourn the loss of our brilliant, beloved colleague Ann Hornaday, longtime film critic for The Washington Post and author of “Talking Pictures: How to Watch Movies” and an upcoming book on ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN. A gift of a critic, writer and friend. washingtonpost.com/obituarie…
This week's episode is up earlier than usual because there's a lot to discuss. We tackle three big documentaries:

NAZA: Hard to think of a doc this sobering and damning that is also so visually astonishing. A film to watch late at night. Did you dream the whole thing? Were those horrible stories you heard real? You could go to bed, pretend it didn't happen. But the movie demands you wake up.
Of all the fight scenes in the new STREET FIGHTER, the most interesting is the one that happens off screen as BAD TRIP director Kitao Sakurai tries (and fails) to insert a little hip irreverence into this aging franchise.

WHALEFALL: Best when it's brutal, keeping us as confused as its main character regarding exactly where inside the whale we are. I dug the production design and sound design. And I would give anything for a survival tale that doesn't double as a character-building exercise.
There are two extraordinary documentaries opening this weekend. Here's my review of the first of those two: ONCE UPON A TIME IN HARLEM. screendaily.com/reviews/once…
