"In Oct 2023, I provided expert testimony to a European court investigating surveillance technology used to facilitate human rights abuses across North Africa." In his first piece for @TimepDC, @RamyRaoof draws the connection between European surveillance tech & MENA repression.
NEW: MENA govts are among the top clients in the global digital surveillance market. TIMEP's @RamyRaoof breaks down how European surveillance tech continues to enable repression across MENA, as weak EU export controls leave the trade largely unchecked. timep.org/2026/10/13/how-eur…

We've been saying that when the world is silent, the crackdown on press freedom will intensify. Here we are. Egyptian journalist and @MadaMasr's @linaattalah called in for questioning before the Supreme State Security Prosecution. This is the 6th case against Mada in 6 years.

Egypt's leaders plan a military curated succession while attacking what's left of independent press. The impunity fueling this was fostered by the US waiving rights conditions on military aid & the EU falsely claiming Egypt improved rights to disburse billions in conditioned aid.
Lina Attalah, Mada Masr’s editor-in-chief, received a summons today from the Supreme State Security Prosecution to attend a questioning session on Wednesday, October 21. The summons did not say why she is being questioned. The new investigation, Case 9072/2026, is the sixth case brought against Mada Masr, its journalists and its editor-in-chief in the past six years. The most recent was in August 2025, when the security prosecution released Attalah on LE30,000 bail. She was questioned at the time on charges of “broadcasting false news” and “using a website without a license,” based on a National Security Agency investigation report, in relation to a Mada Masr story on prisoners’ complaints of abuse in detention facilities. When asked why she trusted the sources cited in the story, Attalah said she had abided by professional journalistic standards and had acted in the public interest. She also pointed to the legally protected right to inform authorities of events through publication, noting that the outlet presents a full range of viewpoints. storage.googleapis.com/madam…
