Mike Lawler is obsessed with attacking Chuck Schumer's support for the Jewish community.
I live in NY-17. I'm voting tomorrow. I didn't want to go there. But he's begging for it on election eve. Let's unpack his record.
Now, how did Mike Lawler become Rockland GOP chair?
He endorsed an open antisemite for county legislator. James Foley ran the "Block the bloc" blog and the "Block the Block Vote" Facebook page targeting Hasidic Jews. He campaigned on "Ramapo Mafia" signs. He threatened to assault Orthodox Jews. At the time, Foley was known as the most radicalized anti-Orthodox voice in Rockland County. Lawler endorsed him anyway, calling Foley his "good friend" and a "trusted voice of change and hope."
Then Foley returned the favor. He took the Rockland GOP to court. The judge threw out the bylaw. Days later, Lawler was able to become chair. He owes his chairmanship to one of the most vicious antisemites in Rockland County.
Then there's the 2019 "Storm is Brewing" video, condemned by both parties as antisemitic for warning of a Hasidic "takeover." Back then Lawler was Deputy Supervisor of Orangetown and a GOP operative. Mike was accused of being part of the planning group. The email names "Mike L." right in it.
His ally Brett Yagel was ruled by a judge to have discriminated against Jews when he was mayor of Pomona. Lawler endorsed him for Assembly not once but twice.
That's the résumé of the man attacking America's highest-ranking Jewish elected official for not doing enough to fight antisemitism. The man who wrote a book on antisemitism, calling out both the far right and the far left.
The man whose great-grandmother was gunned down by the Nazis with 30 of her relatives, ages three months to 83.
Someone should tell Mike Lawler that repeating one Yiddish word, "shanda," over and over doesn't make you the defender of Jews. It makes you the actual Shanda.
Sit this one out, Mike.
