Good morning collectors! ☀️
1975 Topps #90 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar | PSA 9
The front says Los Angeles. The back still says Milwaukee.
Sometimes a basketball card captures more than a player. It captures a turning point in NBA history.
On June 16, 1975, the Milwaukee Bucks traded three-time MVP Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to the Los Angeles Lakers in a blockbuster four-player deal. This card became his first regular Topps issue as a Laker, marking the beginning of a 14-year chapter that would produce five NBA championships.
But look closely at the reverse. Although Kareem is identified as a Laker, his home is still listed as Milwaukee, and every season in his statistical record belongs to the Bucks.
And here’s another fascinating detail: Those now-iconic goggles were still relatively new. Kareem began wearing protective eyewear during the 1974–75 season following a serious eye injury. What eventually became one of basketball’s most recognizable looks was originally a necessity to protect his vision.
In his first season in Los Angeles, Kareem averaged 27.7 points, 16.9 rebounds, and 4.1 blocks, capturing his FOURTH MVP award. Remarkably, the Lakers finished 40–42 and missed the playoffs!
For collectors, the challenge goes beyond the history.
Centering is one of the notorious weaknesses of the 1975 Topps basketball issue. Its unforgiving black frame makes even small alignment issues painfully obvious. Finding an exceptionally centered example in Mint condition is no easy task.
PSA Population:
PSA 9 — 45 copies
PSA 10 — Just 6 copies
After examining numerous PSA 9 examples, I have yet to find another with centering this impressive on both sides.
An extraordinary survivor from a 330-card set originally sold in 15-cent wax packs.
Before Magic. Before Showtime. Before five Lakers championships.
This is where Kareem’s Los Angeles story begins.
