Former Chief Justice, and UGM Presidential Flagbearer David Maraga has urged Parliament to amend Section 39 of the Elections Act and resolve questions surrounding the counting, transmission and declaration of results before 2027. “Kenya cannot afford to enter the election with unresolved doubts.”

Following last Thursday’s parliamentary decision to reject proposed amendments to Section 39 of the Elections Act, the People’s Coalition on Electoral Reforms- @Reforms_Ke led by @dkmaraga today called for urgent legislative action to safeguard the 2027 General Election. Kenya cannot afford a repeat of the 2007/08 post-election violence. We need transparent elections, verifiable results and public confidence that every vote counts. The coalition will introduce an amendment Bill in both the National Assembly and the Senate to strengthen electoral safeguards. We must act now to protect the vote and safeguard our peace. 10. Upshot of this deletion per Parliamentary Procedure is the defeat of any proposed amendments to Clause 22, including our proposed S.39 which is Constitutionally compliant in terms of Arts. 86 & 138 & implements the CoA decisions in Maina Kiai @katibainstitute cases. @UGMParty

9. To defeat transparency brought by the @Reforms_Ke new S. 39, Bread-Based led by both Majority & Minority Leaders and Hon. Kaluma introduced in the order paper 2 notices to amend the Senate Bill by deleting & therefore dropping the entire Clause 22. This passed by acclamation.

8. Due to insufficiency of clause 22 in the Senate Amendment Bill, @Reforms_Ke led by @dkmaraga drafted & presented amendments via @CaroliOmondi. It introduces a new S.39 for live-streaming of both hourly voter turnout & results declaration across 290 Constituencies. @UGMParty
