USC's Stevens Neuroimaging & Informatics Institute pioneers neuroimaging tech to study the brain, sharing data globally. Home of the Lab of Neuro Imaging (LONI)

Some parts of the brain are hard to capture on MRI. In the brainstem and the region just above the eyes, scans that trace the brainโ€™s wiring can return with missing nerve-fiber information ๐Ÿง  ๐Ÿฉป Our researchers, led by co-first authors Shuo Huang and Lujia Zhong and senior author Yonggang Shi, PhD, built a generative AI model that estimates what belongs in those gaps. In scans from nearly 2,000 adults, it produced more complete maps of a major movement pathway. Learn more ๐Ÿ‘‰ bit.ly/47UKyOf

Our researchers are part of a new $4.5 million, three-year effort funded by BDยฒ Discoveries to study a group of brain cells that may help drive mood switching between depression and mania in bipolar disorder. Christopher Ching, PhD, from our team is co-principal investigator with Laramie Duncan, PhD, of Stanford, and Fernando Goes, MD, of Johns Hopkins. They will combine donated brain tissue, genetics, and brain imaging to test whether โ€œswitch cellsโ€ in the retrosplenial cortex play a role. Learn more: bit.ly/47Fqv6j

Our associate director @PTenigma will lead a global study of brain function across eight mental illnesses, which the team expects to be the largest fMRI study ever conducted. Backed by a five-year, $3.2 million @NIH grant, Thompson and the @enigmabrains Consortium will analyze over 94,000 brain scans from 27 countries with one shared method, so conditions such as schizophrenia, depression, autism, and PTSD can be compared side by side. Our associate director @PTenigma joined @drmarkhyman to talk about what large-scale brain imaging is teaching us about the link between body and brain health ๐Ÿง  The conversation covers โ€œbrain age,โ€ why metabolic health, sleep, and nutrition matter for the brain, and what an Alzheimerโ€™s risk gene does and doesnโ€™t tell you about your future. Thompson also discusses his work leading the @enigmabrains Consortium. Watch: piped.video/watch?v=DgzVtVVSโ€ฆ
