Genuinely saddened
@ladiesfootball management have refused to meet with us. In a week when the principle of consent is front and centre in Ireland, a reminder that female Gaelic footballers who do not want to play against, and undress in front of, males are being denied a voice.
📢 IMPORTANT UPDATE 📢
We wrote to LGFA management with questions relating to its policy of male inclusion. We have received a response. Some details:
#1
The association's transgender policy, ratified on 15 February 2023, promises a review at least every three years.
That date passed in February 2026.
In their response to us, LGFA leadership - CEO Lyn Savage and President Trina Murray - gave no completed review or firm timetable.
#2
We asked leadership to meet with us to discuss the review and concerns raised around fairness, safety and player welfare.
They declined, stating that further policy discussions would be dealt with through the ongoing Gaelic Games integration process.
#3
The response cites seven applications against 210,000+ members and that they "respectfully suggest your concerns have to be seen in proportion, alongside the association's legal obligations and its responsibility to all of its members".
But total membership tells us little about the number of fixtures affected or whether welfare concerns were addressed.
If the policy has safety and fairness implications, citing the number of players participating under the terms of the policy as a rationale is incoherent.
#4
Whatever your view of the policy, the following questions deserve answers:
1. When will the review happen?
2. How can members contribute?
3. How are welfare concerns handled while the existing policy remains in force?
4. Why must an existing policy await integration when the three associations continue to manage and review other policies independently?
5. What happened to the welfare concerns already raised by parents through the association's established channels?
6. Why was the number of applications used as a response to concerns about welfare and risk, rather than evidence showing how those concerns had been assessed?
Members deserve transparency, a clear timetable and an effective route to be heard.
Women and girls deserve fair and safe sport.
