HNI Indian Fathers are destroying their own business and blaming their GenZ son for it.
They say the boy isn't ready. The boy is 28.
In most family firms you will find the same three traps.
1. The Signature Trap: the father still signs every cheque above ₹50,000. The son runs operations which means WhatsApp and paying office electricity bills.
2. The Audience Trap: every decision the son makes gets reversed in front of staff. After the third time, the son stops deciding. Then the father says, see, he doesn't take initiative.
3. The Succession Trap: no will, no shareholding transfer, no plan. Asked about it, the father says "abhi time hai." He's had a stent put in.
So what does the son actually do? He waits. He plays Director-Director at a company where he can't approve a ₹60,000 purchase. The staff know who the real boss is. So do the suppliers. So does he.
And the father is 100% to blame. He built a business that cannot survive a day without him and he calls that strength.
The old Marwari firms handed the gaddi to the son at 18 and the father moved to the back room. Today's founder hands over nothing and moves to a bigger cabin.
If you are 28 and still need your father's signature, you are not the director. You are the nominee.
