35-year-old Ugandan National Appears in Durban Court After Allegedly Being Found With R1.6 Million in Counterfeit R200 Notes in Umhlanga
A 35-year-old Ugandan national, identified as Mulema, appeared briefly in the Durban Magistratesā Court on Monday after allegedly being found in possession of counterfeit R200 notes worth R1.6 million in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal. He faces a charge of possessing counterfeit money following his arrest.
According to a source cited by IOL, police received a tip-off that Mulema was acting suspiciously at a block of flats in Umhlanga, where he was allegedly seen entering and leaving the building with several men. Police were reportedly told he could be involved in drug dealing or operating a brothel, but these allegations were not confirmed.
When officers questioned Mulema, he allegedly identified himself as a cleaner. A subsequent search of his flat reportedly uncovered a safe that could not initially be opened because police did not have the key. After gaining access to the safe, officers allegedly discovered the counterfeit banknotes. The state also alleges that he did not have a valid passport and had previously supplied false immigration information.
Mulema is expected to have a bail hearing on October 29. The state alleges that he contravened the South African Reserve Bank Act 90 of 1989, read with the Prevention of Counterfeiting Currency Act 16 of 1965 and section 250 of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977. He remains accused of the offences, and the allegations have yet to be tested in court.
