Antibiotic resistance alters the ability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to invade bacteria from the respiratory microbiome academic.oup.com/evlett/arti…
A short thread 🧵:
New pre-print from my lab: how does the chemical composition of infection-like environments shape how costly (or not) antibiotic resistance mutations are? TLDR;efflux pump mutants can have a selective advantage in synthetic human urine mediated by oxalate

Excited to share this perspective article from my group - how can the interactions between microbes shape the spread of antibiotic resistance mutations?
Thank you @MicrobioSoc for inviting us to submit this 🦠

We outline existing theory and empirical support for how microbial interactions can influence the probability of new antibiotic resistance mutations emerging, the costs associated with these mutations, and their ability to transit to new sites
Great to write this article with two brilliant PhD students in my group, Lauren Pittaccio and Jack Knowles, who work on understanding these interactions in order to develop new strategies to combat resistance based on manipulating microbial interactions 🦠
🔍Check out our latest Micro Briefing highlighting a new review from @WheatleyRM and team at @QUBbioscience@QUBelfast on the influence of microbial interactions on the occurrence of resistance mutations, published in Microbiology. Read the full article🔗 doi.org/10.1099/mic.0.001749

Just out in Biological Reviews:
Non-native species have higher consumption rates than their native counterparts
Through a global meta-analysis, we show that non-native consumers are often characterised by more efficient use of resources 👾 🍱
