I’ve debated whether to weigh in on the whole-body scan discourse, and honestly, I think this is a no-win situation for physicians.
We can explain concerns about false positives, overdiagnosis, unnecessary procedures, anxiety, and downstream costs. Some people will find that useful. Others have already decided they want the information regardless of the tradeoffs.
People are free to spend their money however they choose. If you get the scan and it finds something, we’ll be here to help you interpret it and navigate the consequences.
But once we’ve explained the risks, continuing to argue about it feels less like medicine and more like shouting into the void.
