Kishimoto explained that a manga about Boruto wasn't his idea, nor is it his manga. Now he's writing his own sequel. Boruto is an alternate universe
Nobody will miss Boruto except for the few Boruto fans who need Boruto to be attached to Naruto—because otherwise, nobody cares

Kishimoto stated it really is Ikemoto's manga for Boruto. The new Naruto manga announced at NYCC is set in the time period after the original series but before Boruto begins. Both are part of the same timeline according to official announcements.
