We welcome the EIC’s recommendation to strengthen the role of Independent Adviser on Ministerial Standards by placing it on a statutory footing and introducing a more independent recruitment process.
But the PM should go further, ensuring that the process for investigating complaints about ministerial misconduct, including the final determination on facts, is fully and transparently independent of political influence.
ALT Paragraph from the Ethics and Integrity Commission Chair to the PM, on the Independent Adviser on Ministerial Standards, stating that ‘the system for the enforcement of standards at the top of government requires a greater degree of independence. Making this change for future appointments would future-proof the integrity of the role’.
Doug Chalmers, Chair of the EIC, has written to the Prime Minister this morning on the health of ethical standards in public life.
While acknowledging where progress has been made, the letter urges the government to accelerate reform in a range of areas.
