Governor Cardoso is right about the risks. The opportunities are even bigger.
Africa’s cross-border payment systems are still too slow, too expensive, and too exclusionary for MSMEs that power our economy.
That was the starting point of our contribution to the national conversation now featured in both Nairametrics and Punch.
At the Africa Stablecoin Network, our position is clear: Stablecoins are not about speculation. They are about building an efficient, regulated payment infrastructure for African trade.
When transactions move in minutes instead of days, and remittance costs drop from 5–7% to under 1%, we unlock faster access to suppliers for MSMEs, stronger intra-African trade under AfCFTA, and greater participation in the global economy
We agree with the CBN that the risks currency substitution, FX pressure, and systemic stability, must be taken seriously.
But those risks are best addressed through coordination, not hesitation. The next step is a unified national strategy that enables innovation to thrive within clear, forward-thinking rules.
Because for Africa, this is not a future conversation. It is an economic necessity.
