There’s plenty of room for new companies to compete with established defense contractors, but some investors are pouring money into a market they don’t fully understand. Expect some expensive lessons ahead!

Why haven’t autonomous drones fully replaced human FPV operators on the battlefield? Luke Allen (co-founder/CTO of @allencontrol discusses a key issue. Computer vision can recognize a vehicle or person, but battlefield targets aren’t always visually identifiable. A bunker might look like nothing more than a dark spot in the woods. Identifying it as a target requires intelligence and context that an autonomous system may not have.

At xTech Overwatch Pegasus Charge III, Overland AI's autonomous ground vehicles (AGVs) supported the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment across a multi-vendor exercise. ULTRA carried ISR, ACS Bullfrog counter-UAS, and NanTrak electronic warfare payloads. Soldiers trained on our systems, took them into the field, and gave us their honest feedback.
