🧬 Day 8 of 15 | Sugar & Your Liver
Here is what happens inside your liver every time you drink a sugary beverage — step by step:
1️⃣ Sugar enters your bloodstream
2️⃣ Fructose is sent DIRECTLY to the liver — unlike glucose, it bypasses all other tissues
3️⃣ The liver converts excess fructose into triglycerides (fat)
4️⃣ Fat accumulates inside liver cells → Fatty Liver (MASLD)
5️⃣ Fat triggers chronic inflammation → MASH
6️⃣ Inflammation activates hepatic stellate cells
7️⃣ Stellate cells produce collagen → FIBROSIS begins
8️⃣ Repeated injury → scar tissue replaces healthy liver → CIRRHOSIS
One cola = 10 teaspoons of sugar your liver processes every single time.
The liver has no way to say no.
But YOU do.

🏆 The #FGcup is here and this paper is in for the running! 🔥
📘 Read our top 8 scoring papers before participating in the voting process!
In this fantastic paper, the authors evaluate therapeutic plasma exchange (PLEX) in alcoholic hepatitis + ACLF.
📊 Post-PLEX, MELD declined significantly from 31.6 to 26.5, p<0.001, with greater reduction among survivors.
🧬 Post-PLEX AARC score predicted 1-month mortality (AUC) 0.808; p=0.002).
🏥 No major adverse events occurred.
PLEX is a safe, feasible, and potentially life-saving in severe alcohol-associated hepatitis–related ACLF — particularly for patients ineligible for steroids.

Therapeutic plasma exchange in severe alcohol-associated hepatitis
Why this matters:
Severe alcohol-associated hepatitis (AAH) complicated by ACLF carries extremely high short-term mortality, and effective therapeutic options remain limited.
Key takeaways:
• Primary, prospective multicentre data in severe AAH precipitating ACLF
• Demonstrates feasibility and safety of therapeutic plasma exchange
• Provides real-world insight into patient selection and early response assessment
Why the editors picked it:
A high-quality original study addressing a major unmet need in the management of severe alcoholic hepatitis, where treatment options are few and outcomes are poor.

Today, the Supreme Court not only reversed nearly 50 years of precedent, it relegated the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues—attacking the essential freedoms of millions of Americans.
