Don't think having nodal pricing would make a difference when you're committed to building renewables in advance of transmission as government policy. Maybe it simply exposes the stupidity up front if anything rather than letting cost benefit analysis magic fudge more numbers.
You can't run a system with millions of variable consumption and generation and storage devices the way you ran it when you had 150 fossil fuel generators and a handful of nukes. It's not the new technology (wind, solar, batteries, EVs) that's the issue - it's the total failure to change the way we manage the system. This is why locational wholesale market (which is automatically dramatically more flexible) was so powerful - and is increasingly used in the OECD. We need decentralised signals so the system self-optimises. Octopus already processes 300,000 data points a second to do this for the many GW we control - but the brute force of the main system management just doesn't have this granularity. It is increasingly urgent to reform our electricity system. These control room issues, the £50m spent balancing the system in a single day, the £3bn a year on curtailment, the prospect of £7-9bn a year of curtailment by 2029/2030. It's all avoidable but not with the tools of yesterday

My first task for the National Design Studio was to make Rampart smaller. It's our frontier on-device privacy model trained to filter all personal user data before it even gets to America.gov After a lot of hill-climbing and data labeling, I'm excited to launch Rampart Edge along with @as400495. So small the weights fit in a notebook. This will noticeably speed up the load time of America.gov for hundreds of thousands of Americans. Under budget and ahead of schedule!
Four months ago, we built Rampart the on-device privacy model. Today we are releasing Rampart Edge. It's 10x smaller, more accurate, and runs on almost any device. ndstudio.gov/posts/introduci…

Breaking News: Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration is making a $30 million investment to build a quantum research lab at New York University. In exchange, the city will receive 15% of any proceeds from intellectual property developed in that lab. nyti.ms/4jUe7GD

America has 16,876 machine shops. 83% employ fewer than 20 people. Just nine employ more than 500. New defense companies are moving from prototypes to mass production, and every missile, drone, ship, and rocket they ultimately produce needs to run through one of these small shops. That friction is a national security liability. Connor Love and Collen Larson on the next generation of American manufacturing that gets built by smoothing it: a16z.news/p/the-case-for-the…

Hey, so this Saturday you can come to the Grand Opening party for Tabletop Library in Berkeley all day and night. It'll be worth the drive over, you know, if you want. @BerkeleyTTL is a side quest I've been on with @andrewmason, @tabletopgrl & david c to make a whimsical place that gets us off our phones, playing with each other, and holds board gaming up for the awesomeness that it has become recently. It's been a labor of love where we've also built a dewey decimal system for games, a board game recommender service, used a card catalog from UC Berkeley as the front desk, and a dozen other little details I'd love to show you. tabletoplibrary.com/news/gra… And after the visit you can go less than a block to the comic shop (escapist) and sci-fi bookstore (dark carnival) in what must now be the nerdiest single block anywhere.

I’ve joined the National Design Studio 🇺🇸 The technological miracle that is "AI" was only made possible because of the freedoms and excellence that America protects. It's a great honor of mine to be able to give back to the country I love. I’ll be spending time with the @ndstudio, where I'll help the team build beautiful and modern federal software like america.gov. While not serving at NDS, I will continue my work at Cognition. We've suddenly found ourselves with a Super Intelligence that can invent dreams. It can heal the sick. It can drive a car. And it will define the next decade of American progress. Today just felt too consequential to stay away. At Cognition, @ScottWu often talks about how AI will make everything from the DMV to your child's elementary school website work as beautiful and smoothly as Instagram. This is exactly the mission of NDS, and it's why I'm so excited to join.

Great summary of what the problem is. Right now, it’s impossible to pay your own way.
Google offered to pay for the data center infrastructure upgrades outright. The utility said no, because that wouldn't go into their rate base. They restructured it as a prepayment instead so they could rate base it anyway.⁣ ⁣ Result: everyone's bill went up $5.77 a month.

Incredibly bullish on rethinking chips and power electronics for energy that’s available instead of big btm buildouts that work half the time. Market will catch up that the best power is the one that’s already going live
There’s over 50 terawatt-hours of curtailed, inverter-clipped, and otherwise wasted solar power annually, just in the US. That’s a lot of juice to spill, but Will and Varun are on the case. Rune converts watts into bits and, turns out, it’s a good time to be selling GPU-hours.

BCV raised a new fund, but they somehow can’t afford to not run ads in their announcement? Something’s not adding up Congrats @ChristinaPhili5 @rkhkimx and co!
We are thrilled to announce $1.6B of new early stage capital to back founders building for a Post-AGI world. It's never been a better time to build a highly ambitious company. For the first time, AI can do the work, which means tapping into labor budgets instead of just software budgets. Chips, energy, physical AI, robotics, and personal software are all exploding. We want to hear the most ambitious ideas. In a time of rapid change, there is wisdom in heritage. While Bain Capital is large today, approximately $225B in AUM across its many strategies and geographies, the firm began with just $37M in 1984. In 1987, the early partners sat down to codify their principles for running the firm into a simple mantra. In 2026, we feel that mantra is the right one for an investment firm at the beginning of technological revolution: Make Money. Have Fun. Live with Integrity. We are ready to go!

Ahead of Cal football’s season opener against UCLA last week, head coach Tosh Lupoi enlisted the presidents of UC Berkeley’s fraternities and sororities to ensure a “rowdy,” sold-out student section. The team offered incentives to get “butts in the seat,” including a shuttle service up to Memorial Stadium and the potential opportunity for frat brothers to call offensive plays. “Fraternities running out of that tunnel, perhaps some guys are calling some plays for us, we’re always looking for a growth mindset,” Lupoi said in an interview with NBC Sports Bay Area. “We’re going to let it rip on the first play of the game, and they have some innovative calls — we might get that from (Sigma Alpha Epsilon).” Read our coverage at the link below: dailycal.org/news/campus/stu…

Alright thats it, I'm starting an Engineering Society for people who actually love engineering for the love of the game. Don't ask to join, you know if you already fit in. San Francisco has turned into wall street and everyone is here to make money through arbitrage. Me, and a few others around here, are here to build the best products humans have ever made, and as a BY PRODUCT, generate tremendous value and profits. We're not the same.
