People overcomplicate venture investing - it's deceptively simple..
1) You have to win the right to
2) Find and invest in exceptional founders
3) Just before it's "consensus"
4) Consistently every year
Vast majority of VCs are able to do maybe one of these right, some are able to do a few but to be truly truly great, you genuinely have to do ALL of them right.
And, that consistency of being right is REALLY hard and less talked about. You have to really want it and see it - Djokovic style, enjoying hitting the ball everyday and always focused on the next point to be won.
Regardless, of what your track record is, or how much wealth you have accumulated. Or how many misses you have had. Or, what the TVPI is of the current (or last) fund. Or, which star GP left your firm.
Because the next opportunity might be around the corner, and it might go to someone else, if you didn't want it enough.
And, sure the naysayers might say the feedback loop is long, you can "fake" it for a while especially if you have an early hit (power law etc) but it does catch up. In at least how your mindset is, how you meet founders and your own ability to capture the next wave.
