Somaliweyn💙
As of yesterday on National Poetry Day, I have received the honour of becoming Birminghams Poet Laureate ❤️ It is humbling to be chosen to represent the city that gave me so much, the city that has moulded me, I pray now that I am able to give back.

A truly historic and inspiring moment. Ayan Aden’s poetry has given Reimagining the Future a powerful human voice; connecting food security, dignity, identity and hope. Wonderful to see WFP’s Acting Executive Director @CarlSkau engaging directly with @ayanmoaden on the role of youth creativity and diaspora engagement in building a more resilient Somalia. This is exactly what meaningful partnership should look like: creating space for Somali voices, especially young people and the diaspora, to help shape the narrative and the future. Proud of what the WFP–GSD partnership continues to inspire. #ReimaginingTheFuture #Somalia #DiasporaEngagement #YouthVoices #FoodSecurity #ClimateResilience #WFP #GSD

An honour to contribute a poem to @WFPSomalia’s Reimagining the Future and speak with @CarlSkau about youth and diaspora engagement in Somalia’s future. Storytelling is empowerment. It matters that Somali stories are told through a lens of possibility, agency and hope. 🫡

piped.video/watch?v=prIGWimk… Very moved by this, an example of how Birmingham is a shining beacon for togetherness. 'to be a birmingham citizen is to be a citizen of the world, but also have that special generous gift of hospitality to others....'

The killing in Small Heath is horrific, Subhanallah. That video should not be circulating, and out of respect for him and his family, I hope people stop sharing it. May Allah have mercy on his soul and grant him the highest place in Jannatul Firdaus. Ameen.

Intergenerational work always brings me joy. It reminds me that young people are leaders today, with something to contribute now. There’s joy, too, in learning from our elders and the wisdom they carry. Somewhere in between, we hold hands and mould a better future 🤍

I’ve been recruited into the Substack cult 🤣 Jokes aside, I’ve been meaning to return to writing, and this feels like the perfect way. I’ll be sharing the lessons, questions and blessings I carry with me. Join me ❤️ ayanmoaden.substack.com/p/in…

A former child refugee from Somalia who has volunteered in her community since she was a teenager is about to become an MP. Having faced rank racism both online and in person, Sagal Abdi-Wali's victory is a spit in the eye for racists everywhere

The smear campaign against Sagal has been eye-opening, especially how some political actors weaponise legitimate public concerns to vilify her. We’re unequivocally with our sister. On the doorstep, we’ve felt real support across Camden too. Guul, insha’Allah. Victory tonight 🫡

I belong to no political party. But when I see a woman who has spent 20+ years working at grassroots level for her community, I will support her. Sometimes changing the system requires principled people within it. My support is rooted in her record, not party politics🫡🫡
