About a year ago, I wrote myself a ‘research philosophy’ and stuck it to my wall.
When research opportunities have come up, I’ve used it to decide whether to go for them or not.
I can’t tell you how useful and liberating it’s been

🌱Call to action!🌱 I'm developing an assay to help our growers evaluate and optimise their wheat nitrogen management, and I'm looking for groups with wheat nitrogen trials that I could subsample from🙂. Please contact me if you're interested in this collaboration opportunity.
Tomorrow, we’ll be announcing the outcomes of Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities 2025 and Linkage Projects 2024 Round 1. All Lead Chief Investigators will receive a notification email to check RMS regarding applications.
Stay tuned for an update.
Also, @GeoscienceAus or @TERN_Aus if you are taking more soil samples across Australia in the coming years, we would LOVE to talk with you about measuring iodine concentrations!
🚨New paper! 🚨
We looked at environmental and geographical factors affecting iodine concentrations in Australian wheat
Iodine concentrations were low, and distance to coast had no significant effect, unlike findings from Europe

ALT A graphical abstract for our paper.
Title of the paper: Investigating environmental and geographical factors affecting iodine concentrations in Australian wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grain
Includes the highlights of the paper, which were:
1) Grain iodine concentrations were low (5-24 μg/kg)
2) Most important predictors of grain iodine were elevation, State and rainfall*topsoil interactions
3) If wheat is going to be an important contributor to human iodine intake, then plants at all sites across WA, SA and VIC would need to be biofortified
There is also a picture of wheat, a map showing sites and depictions of rainfall, site, soil and elevation.

@UTSEngage is looking for local farmers to share their experiences of managing kangaroos on their properties.
Their online survey is open to everyone. It's anonymous. Takes around 10 minutes and is available here 👉 bit.ly/4eNw04j.
Congrats everyone!
Not that I'm eminent enough to be in the College of Experts, but if I was, I would have had to fly on Sunday morning (and miss a day with my family) to get to Canberra on time for a Monday morning start - not everyone lives in SE Australia
Congratulations to the 123 new members inducted into the ARC’s College of Experts for 2025.
The College plays a key role in identifying research excellence to deliver outcomes for Australia’s economic, social, environmental and cultural benefit.

Sudden death of fast growing ewes or lambs on Lucerne is usually clostridia. Make sure your vaccination programme is correct.
Animals that die from clostridia 'blow up' quickly, so it may appear to be bloat. Bloat is unlikely with good fibre supply (straw/hay)
I thoroughly recommend these independent research fellowships at @JohnInnesCentre to all aspiring group leaders. Being awarded one of these fellowships really launched my independent research career. jic.ac.uk/vacancies/independ…
