A fun sighting on the Sunshine Hill wildlife cameras: Northern pygmy owl.
From my book, Yosemite Wildlife: “Pygmy owl—a lovable killer,” declared naturalist Enid Michael. A small but mighty bird, the northern pygmy-owl (Glaucidium gnoma) does not hesitate totake on prey many times their size, even, as Beedy and Pandolfino noted, “domestic chickens more than 60 times their ownweight.” Unlike most other owls, the northern pygmy-owl is active both day and night, and a common indication of the owl’s presence is a mob of squawking songbirds trying to chase off their would-be predator."
