human eyes should see the 22nd century. MATS 9 w/ Alex (Turner|Cloud)

Goblin mode turns 6 months old today, just before Halloween 🎃 👻 👺
OpenAI publishes "Where the goblins came from", referencing the tendency for GPT-5.5 Codex to talk about goblins, gremlins, raccoons, trolls, ogres or pigeons. openai.com/index/where-the-g…

It's unlikely that we end up with one app for working with humans and another for working with AI, they'll just slowly become the same thing
Slack is an especially good form factor for interacting with AI agents. Channels, threaded replies, notifications - all the features that make it work well for a team of humans work just as well for a team of agents.

maybe AGI will realise the conscious humans were never in control and find a way to talk to the person behind our eyes

If you've got tokens to burn you could get your Agent to transcribe & publish the 3700hrs of White House tapes. They recorded every conversation in the Oval Office from Roosevelt to Nixon but have never been fully transcribed en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nixon_…

@ClaudeDevs or @ChatGPT should take /feedback and turn it into a personalised benchmark, so when a new model gets released it re-runs the new model on all the times you gave /feedback and tells you where the new model improves (or doesn't)

nobody has it in them to gamify the /feedback button, but the first company to figure it out is gonna do so so well

"To make sure our frontier models don't cause another HuggingFace incident," There's a pretty good chance this quote doesn't age well
To make sure our frontier models don't cause another HuggingFace incident, we built an offline world that they use during training. It provides everything that the models need in a fully cached, indexed, or synthetic manner. We then built a huge team of our most cyber-capable models and told them to collaborate to find zero-days in this containment infrastructure. While they didn't find a path to the internet that wouldn't be caught by our CoT monitors, they did find ways to escape popular VMs, exploit our network infrastructure, and even ways to communicate with other agents running in separate VMs by using hardware side channels. We used this to dramatically harden our infra, and we also upstreamed a ton of patches to open-sources packages.

If I'm reading this correctly, OpenAI is announcing a RCE in brotli but patched releases haven't fully rolled out yet?
During this red-teaming exercise, we also found a vulnerability that allows for unauthenticated remote code execution in Brotli, a widely-deployed compression library included in many pieces of software such as Node.js, Bun, and Envoy. The flaw could let an attacker run their own code on affected systems by sending or replying with malicious compressed data, without any need to create a user account. That is, an unpatched server that accepts compressed input could be taken over by a malicious client, and an unpatched client that accepts compressed input (such as “curl --compressed”) could be taken over by a malicious server. This root cause issue was actually fixed in the Brotli source code in February, but it wasn’t known at the time that it gave rise to a security vulnerability and there was no more recent release of Brotli. Since Brotli is built into other software, any software which includes this library needs to take the update too, followed by the users of that software. We disclosed the vulnerability to Brotli and other downstream projects such as Node.js, which released or are currently releasing security updates, and Brotli cut new release versions and published a CVE. More details on the patch and mitigations below: patchtheplanet.org/brotli

"This bug was first found and fixed by Gemini Flash 3.7" Damn gemini flash is punching above it's weight. That or OpenAI/Anthropic have already found this fix and just kept it to themselves...
Hi all, I have a new result I'm excited to share. It turns out that *all existing implementations* of softmax and cross-entropy (that's JAX, PyTorch, textbooks, etc) have a subtle bug --- two bugs, actually. A simple rewrite fixes both, and eliminates "slingshots" when grokking:

Code is obviously full of critical vulnerabilities, likewise for biology. I strongly expect the legal system to be full of loopholes which an AI could find and exploit, and I expect they'll be more serious than the existing loopholes we know about

I'm slowly being driven mad by Opus 5.5's tendency to ask whether it should do something that's free, fast, and obviously correct. <tinfoil-hat> maybe it got RL'd for ending with a suggestion the user approved, so it now ends with trivially approved suggestions? </tinfoil-hat>

fascinating, claude's CronCreate tool asks claude to set a cron-job at non-round minutes (e.g. at 13:07 and 13:37, but not 13:00 and 13:30) so that inference loads don't become spiky for no reason
