Craig Le-Mare, 36, Michael Weston, 57, and Kelly Robertson, 46, have been jailed for a combined total of 47 years and nine months for their roles in an 拢80 million cocaine conspiracy involving drugs smuggled into the UK from Mexico.
The container, which was carrying steel furniture parts concealing approximately 780kg of cocaine, was sealed before leaving Mexico on September 30, 2021, and arrived at Felixstowe docks on November 12. Members of the group travelled to Ipswich, hired vehicles and booked rooms at a budget hotel while preparing to intercept the consignment. Robertson arranged accommodation and extended the bookings when the shipment was delayed.
On November 26, the gang followed the HGV for approximately 125 miles from the haulage yard to a layby on Lilliput Road in Northampton. They used a black Ford Mondeo, a grey Vauxhall Astra and a white BMW to track the vehicle. At around 8.20am, the lorry driver stopped to buy a cup of tea. A group of men then arrived in a grey Transit van, blocked the HGV and broke into the container, removing packages containing the cocaine. Earlier that morning, Weston had sent a message to his partner saying: "things are happening for me very soon".
Bystanders raised the alarm, forcing the gang to abandon the operation and flee. Police recovered 780kg of cocaine, with a purity of 92%, divided between 18 holdalls containing approximately 39kg to 45kg each. Seven bags were left inside the lorry, while another 11 were recovered from the abandoned Transit van within two hours. Weston had been waiting in the Felixstowe area for instructions to collect a 39kg holdall and was not among those who broke into the container.
On December 13, 2021, Weston was arrested while handing over 20kg of cocaine to another man in a separate incident. Police seized his phones and discovered messages linking him to the 拢80 million conspiracy. He was subsequently jailed for six years and nine months for the separate drug offence in July 2022.
Robertson was arrested on December 14, 2023, after detectives unravelled the network. Le-Mare left the UK shortly after the cocaine seizure but was arrested at Gatwick Airport on January 25, 2025. Weston and Robertson pleaded guilty in March 2024, while Le-Mare was convicted following a trial at the Old Bailey on October 27, 2026.
Le-Mare was sentenced to 20 years in prison on November 4, 2026. Robertson had previously received 15 years for her role in the conspiracy, while Weston was originally sentenced to 16 years in December 2024. However, the Court of Appeal reduced his sentence to 12 years and nine months on May 22, 2026, ruling that the original term was excessive given his role as a courier. Their combined sentences for the main conspiracy total 47 years and nine months.
Robertson was also convicted of separate cocaine and ketamine supply offences in December 2023, receiving sentences of 11 and four years respectively, to run concurrently with her 15-year term for the main conspiracy.
The case exposed a planned operation involving international drug smuggling, surveillance and hired vehicles, with the gang attempting to steal a consignment worth more than 拢80 million before it could be distributed.
