Many are blaming IMD for yesterday’s weather alerts, but I wouldn’t. When the atmosphere is unstable and conditions favour heavy rainfall, it is better to stay alert than to ignore the risk. However, nobody anticipated the extreme rainfall on October 17, particularly from the west in the form of thunderstorms. Unlike private weather bloggers, IMD and disaster management authorities carry greater public accountability. In my view, @tnsdma could have avoided triggering SMS alerts on such a broad scale. Targeted alerts, issued around 3 hours before an event based on real-time nowcasting, would be more useful. Earlier warnings are justified when there is sufficient confidence, as in the case of cyclones.

Last evening’s rain (October 17) was not a cloudburst event in #Chennai. Rather, it was persistent rainfall caused by repeated thunderstorm formation over the same confined region, with storms continuing to pour rain for more than 4–5 hours.

Many people messaged me, and a few called as well. Nothing to worry. I'm watching the weather closely and if there are any real rain alerts, I'll post.

When I was in Japan, typhoons triggered landslides in several areas, and SMS alerts were sent around 3 hours in advance, with specific details about the affected regions and advice to avoid them. Targeted, location-specific alerts with actionable information can help save more lives than generic warnings.

Tracking weather events from the west in the form of thunderstorms during the NE Monsoon season is very rare.

Many appreciation messages too. Thanks Hi Sir, I am writing this from Chennai, though I originally come from North India. I don’t know if you’ll get a chance to read this, but I felt compelled to reach out and express my deep admiration for your work. I’ve been following your updates silently for the past three years. Whenever the monsoon approaches or heavy rains hit the city, your page is always my first and most trusted source. Beyond the accurate forecasts, I truly recognize and feel the pain, time, and effort you selflessly take to keep the public safe and informed. I may likely be leaving Chennai next year, but before I go, it would be an absolute honor to meet you in person just once if time permits. Thank you so much for everything you do for this city.
