₹54 crore.
That's all that separated India's favourite supermarket from a scooter-and-warehouse app this quarter.
DMart sales, July to September: ₹19,206 cr
Blinkit sales, July to September: ₹19,152 cr
A year ago, Blinkit was at ₹9,891 cr. Barely 61% of DMart.
Growth in one year:
DMart: +18%
Blinkit: +94%
But look at how differently they got here.
DMart has 518 stores, built over 24 years since its first one opened in Powai.
Each store sells about ₹37 cr a quarter.
Blinkit has 2,751 small warehouses you can't walk into, and opened 308 of them in just 3 months.
Each one sells about ₹7 cr a quarter.
And what each keeps from every ₹100 of sales:
DMart: about ₹7.30
Blinkit: about ₹1
DMart is cheap because you drive to it. Blinkit is fast because it drives to you.
Whoever does the travelling pays for it.
The festive quarter comes next. By December, who's bigger: the store you go to, or the store that comes to you?
